Need to increase my Filter Empty
PostSubject: Need to increase my Filter   Need to increase my Filter EmptyTue Oct 14, 2008 12:08 pm

Hi All,

I need to increase my filter size, was thinking of doing a "add on" after my uv light with a 100 ltr plastic drum as part of a free flow system, with media and matting.
Has any body got some idea"s or pics to assist me? My filter set up is on the same forum under" My filter set up". My pond is approx 12 000 ltr.
Any comment will be hugely appreciated. scratch

Hi Wayne,

Why not add a biobooster from Ultra Zap. 15L one will do and it is easy to install.

Hi Wayne

If it was my pond then I would put my bio boosters after my UV light. My thinking is as follows, If you put your booster before the UV then you destroy all the good bacteria that is suppose to go back to the pond that comes from your Bio Boosters.

I have always in stall a UV light just after the sand filter on a “T” joint and control the flow with a ball valve then directly back to the pond, to improve the O² levels in the pond. It also slow the flow down in the Bio Boosters and allow more contact time between the media and the water in the booster. This in my opinion will improve the affectivity of the bio booster. And the slower flow in the UV light will also give more contact time between the water and the UV light.

Hi Wayne. I agree that the best is to place your UV before your biofilter. However, I believe it is not absolutely crucial. Beneficial bacteria are established in colonies inside your biofilter and are not really freeflow. The UV might kill some of the free flow beneficial bacteria.

You mentioned to me that you have a few 100 liter containers available. My question, why buy a booster of 15 liter if you have 100 liter containers available. You can divert half of the flow to the 100 liter container filled with biomedia which will then flow back to the pond via gravity. The surface area created will be far more than what a 15 liter booster will give you. Obviously that would be dependant on whether you have space to hide the 100 liter container, because it might not look good.

Hi Paul,

I do have the space for the container. Thats was the idea I had in mind but was not sure on where to split the system up.

I see that your system has got a split already. One goes to the pond and the other one to your current biofilter and UV.

Divert the one that goes directly to the pond to the 100 liter container and then back. I would put a ball valve on this line to regulate the flow.

Switch your UV and current biofilter.

On a second thought, the tank will be higher than the current filter. The valve will then rather be needed on the current system line to prevent most of the water to go through the current system.

Hi Paul,
I have moved the entire filter system and switched the uv and biofilter. Laughing I need to add in the 100 ltr drum but I take it I must run a 3 rd return to the pond on a gravity fed return confused
