Very seldom they will be good quality.
But I do have a soft spot for them, they are like me BIG, lol
Here are some pics of the same tobi, it's siblings did catch up eventually.

I visited Jaco this afternoon, and after seeing what he has, I'm really just starting!!

An incredible set-up. Congratulations!

Perhaps at the end of the season you must post what you have and we can place orders and organise transport to wherever?

Dankie Jaco, hulle is almal hier- duisende!

My koi keeping suddenly took on a new dimension. Got a huge gift from Jaco, a bag full of metallic fry, to the utter amazement of my two colleagues- one mentioned that I should not put all the fish in one basket!

Some photos:

pond - 2009 Beeding Season - Page 2 IMG_1829

I suppose they will soon outgrow the container- if they survive. I put one of those triangular filters with charcoal and wool in each, but some got stuck. I will wrap it with net and put it back today. An air stone in each.

Just some questions:
1. When should I start feeding?I've read that one should feed 4-5 times a day. For the amount that you gave me, how much per feed, Jaco. I teaspoon of crushed flakes??
2. What about some water changes? I used water from the portapool and after 24h it dies not look as if I have lost anyone.

They look great. I don’t know if this will be of any use to you, but when I had tropical fish and spawned then I did the following:

I removed the eggs and the parents to a separate tank. The female ‘fanned’ the eggs to keep it clean. When they hatched I removed the parents since they are known to eat the fry. I added some anti bacterial stuff to the tank. I fed them brine shrimps which you can buy from pet shop and hatch in salt water. Also added some sinking tablet food and they loved the algae I had in the tank. When they grew bigger I fed them ‘Tetra bits’. Since I had 268 babies in a 125L tank I did small water changes every second day to keep things clean. None of them died and I sold them when they reached about 3cm. Great fun

Hi Albie,
Marius se raad is goed. Maar passop vit te veel voer, ek sal minder as 'n knippie flakes voer slegs tweemaal per dag. Maakfyn tussen jou vingers.
Ruil water so gereeld moontlik, baie belangrik.

I think/hope they are growing, but at least surviving:

pond - 2009 Beeding Season - Page 2 IMG_1841

I think if you compare them against the seam in the net, they are bigger.

Any advice on cleaning the bottom, or should I leave it. If I scoop some of the rubbish out, I end of with numerous tiny fish.

I have been feeding them with the crushed flakes and used a yolk of an egg once.

No, mine are very slow developers!!! (but still alive)

They are still in the 2 containers and the net is just the fishing net. Jaco has the touch, feed them all kind of stuff!!! and my ones are just at 8 mm. (perhaps I interfere too much when I'm at home)

I emptied the infamous Portapool today, found a Showa hidden somewhere and then, with Ernest's help, created a small pond, that can be useful in future. Measurements: Height-80cm, diameter 130cm. Thought I might use it in future for a quarantine pond.

It does not look good, still dirty!!

pond - 2009 Beeding Season - Page 2 IMG_1844

So, why I'm posting this- wouldn't it be better to get the small ones in there? I could use the airpump, but perhaps no filter. Just regular water changes.

The water that I can use is tap water, but I can add sodium thiosulphate and koi clay- what about a scoop of soil, since they grow up in a mud pond??

That water looks really clear in the mud pond Jaco, the fry must be loving it.

Albie, what i used to do when breeding my Angel Fish and Blue Rams is took a small sponge and cut a circle in it and put it around the bottom of a hob filter to stop fry from getting sucked in.

Also try feed freeze dried bloodworms and daphnia etc, the crushed flakes and powdered food worked but but never had the same effect as the live food, fish grew quicker and their colors where much more vibrant.

Cheers
Lee

I often use a 110 mm PVC pipe x 1 meter which I drilled full of holes, put a 2000 liter/hour pump inside and cover the whole pipe with a pair of stockings. It works great.

I got mine from VIP Pets in Northgate but im sure most pet shops should stock it, just make sure its the dried and not frozen so you can crush it finer if need be.
