Congrats, Looking good Jaco seems you gonna have your hands full over the next few months Basketball

Unfortunately im still busy with my pond so not much form my side but i think next year this time ill more than likely try my hand at breeding should i have koi of sufficient age and quality by then.

Form what ive read people cull the first lot of sanke at as early as 3 days old ?, when do you expect to start with the first culling and will it be the same for Kujaku and the sanke ?

Thanks for the pics, always nice to follow and see how they change.

Cheers
Lee

Hi Lee,

I promise to post their progress here.
I usually do my first cull at 4 weeks old or at 1inch 2.5cm.

I like to know what I am looking at.

Is it natural spawning or do you select the parents and place them in a separate pond for spawning? Looks great so far and please keep a few spare 1s for me. I have a spare pond Wink

I select the parents and then spawn them naturally. No milking, I have limmited space for all the fry as it is, I only use about 5%, the rest are flushed away Shocked

Some pictures taken with my phone , sorry poor quality pics.

Metallic fry.

Hi all
Jaco, do you still have that dam you used when I last communicated? You have got lovely combinations to breed with. I was shocked to hear that Leon krull of Wild Coast koi in East London is breeding with twelve pairs. He has got the dams to rare them.
My Shiro Doitsu Muji has spawned with a Doitsu Kohaku on Sunday. Also have a limited space to rare the fry. Last year I got amoung the doitsu Kohaku a few beautiful leather Kohaku's. We will see this year.
What kind of fry can I get if I breed a Ki Hariwake with a Doitsu Kohaku?

Roy

Hi Roy,

Yes I breed in two mud ponds at home.
I do not believe mixing metallic and non metallic.
The offspring will definitely lack sheen, only by cross breeding with the same siblings and parents over and over can you improve what you will get by crossing those two.

Hi there.... I've only be keeping Koi for a couple of months but it's going well to date. I was wondering if anyone knows any breeders in the Port Elizabeth area. Every time I want to buy Koi I have to go to East-London or Knysna. I'm convinced there has to be someone in this area that breed good quality Koi. Any help would be appreciated...

Moved the fry to the mud pond today, about eight of these nets full.
All the yellow are fry , many thousands.
Sanke and Doitsu Kujaku.

Some pics of the offspring from same parent set 4 years ago.

The second pic has both koi from pic 1 and 3 in, at one year old, first and third pic at two years old. See how the yellow turned dark orange.

You must sell some in the near future. I will put the FS number plate on them so people will know where they came from. Still new to this game but I am sure that they can find a happy home 160km south

The Shusui and Ochiba will only bee spawned next weekend.

Will mister Tobi present problems besides eating most of the food, or do you get good quality Tobies as well? About 15 years ago I had tropical fish and the biggest fish from spawning was my best fish. They laid eggs every 3 weeks and sold them in Junkmail. A guy from Krugersdorp took about 10 to put in his tank which use to be his dinning room and the one sold by mistake became his favourite
