Hi Wayne

There are two discussions on blanket weed on this forum. See https://koionline.forumotion.com/what-should-i-bear-in-mind-f22/blanket-weed-t267.htm

You clearly have blanket weed and you should not worry too much about it. It does not influenve the clarity of the water. As time goes by and your pond matures, the problem will disappear. It is natures way of creating a balance in your pond.

You can use normal pool salt, available from all pool shops. I found that Macro is currently the cheapest around Table View area @ R 29 / bag.

Hi Paul,

Thanks again. What quantity am I looking at as a dosage. Is there a differance between iodizedsalt and non iodized? Laughing
I did a water test yesterday, everything is good.

Iodized salt contains iodide rather than iodine. To iodize it, they add sodium or potassium iodide in addition to sodium chloride (salt).

You should use non iodized salt. It is much cheaper and better.

I only add salt this time of the year to prevent any "spring disease" and to control algae. I suggest 3 kg / 1000 liters(30 kg/10 000 liters)

It will prevent any possible Nitrite poisoning due to the fact that the fish start to eat more and the bacteria to convert Nitrites into Nitrates are not there yet(Cape Town area), it creates a mucus coat for protection, it prevents bacterial infections and controls algae.

The algae can be removed but so it is better to avoid it. The algae can be overcome with use of good quality LED lights in the tank. The water changes and filtration is also important for algae removing.
