I did one of my selling ponds with Hydro Seal which is an excellent product, but encountered a few cracks, and then, no matter what sealer you use, your pond will leak.

Decided to go the fibreglass route as Collin suggested in the first place. Should have listened. At the end of the day, not that expensive, and hopefully the last of my leaks.

It costed me R 4700.00 to cover a 37 000 liter pond. DIY

Nice one Paul!

Becuase I did 50mm bottom drains on my pond, I was thinking of perhaps covering those up.....installing 110mm bottom drains and then fibreglassing the pond.

Going to be a big job so will only do it if I really have to, and thats if I have a leak or something....so far...touch wood all is good!

Hi Colin, we can do with some "good advice" on this topic. You have done so many fibre glass projects.

I note that the instructions from Allied says that you must first prime the area with resin. I have never done that. I purely put the resin on, and immediately go ahead with the reinforcing matting.

Another question, is one layer of FG enough and is it necessary to finish with the tissue?

What other tips and tricks can you(or anyboby else) offer to fellow hobyists?

Paul I am no glass fibre expert, however I have always only used one layer of 250g mat as I see the glass fibre as a sealant and therefore only one layer is needed provided you have a good sound structure. If your structure is not sound even two layers will not be sufficient.

yes, nothing beats fiberglass. I DIY'd my own pond in 2007 and its still holding the water in... i guess that is a good sign.

Admin,
It is a brilliant idea, and I never new it is so easy to apply.
In Zambia it is just too expensive....but I will explore those options too.
A friend of mine used rubber paint, which is around R700 for 20 l and for a 30000 liter pond he used I think, one tin...it is supposed to be two coat but he put only one, and his pond is fine.
