I found that with small koi, koi grow faster in a large surface area / shallow ponds. However, large koi need pressure (from deeper ponds) for development of good body shapes. At least 1.5m deep but preferably 2m. With deep ponds , you also minimise the negative effect of temperature fluctuations.
With a 3m pond, it is difficult to see your koi and experience the koi as well and it is difficult to catch them.
I like a pond that has a deep and shallow area. Deep area for them to escape from too warm/cold temperature and to develop body shape and a shallow area where you can feed and experience them better.
