I need some advise on this matter. I have enough space but would like to know what will be the best for the koi. Do I for example go 10m x 20m x 1m deep or 10m x 5m x 3m deep. Temp flux in my area goes from -5 c on winter nights to +35 c on summer days. Thx

Hi Ray

In my opinion I think 1m is to shallow, especially with temp flux.my pond is 3m deep and I find that in winter the koi stay more at he bottom of the pond were the water is warmer.this is only my opinion but min depth should be around +1.8m.wait for more advice from the forum then make your decision Smile

Hi Ray

See you say 10 x 20 x 1.....if you have the area to go 10 x 20 then keep it at that and rather go down to 2m or 1.8m

That would be perfect..........if you are working towards a specific budget on cement\bicks etc then do a 10 x 10 x 2.......which should give you more or less the same volume

There is some info on the Internet that UV light of sun rays damage the skin of the Koi, but I have not found scientific research or proof of that yet...some people say there is no such a thing.
So better safe than sorry...make it deep.
Also depth allows koi to exercise better, since they use more energy to go up and down than lengthwise swimming. That creates a better body shape.

I found that with small koi, koi grow faster in a large surface area / shallow ponds. However, large koi need pressure (from deeper ponds) for development of good body shapes. At least 1.5m deep but preferably 2m. With deep ponds , you also minimise the negative effect of temperature fluctuations.

With a 3m pond, it is difficult to see your koi and experience the koi as well and it is difficult to catch them.

I like a pond that has a deep and shallow area. Deep area for them to escape from too warm/cold temperature and to develop body shape and a shallow area where you can feed and experience them better.
