Blocked bottom drain Empty
PostSubject: Blocked bottom drain   Blocked bottom drain EmptyThu Jan 05, 2012 10:24 pm

Hi everyone, haven't posted for a long time!

As things work, while on holiday, my waterfall stopped and to cut a long story short, there is a blockage in the pipe leading to the pump. (I have one of the dome bottom drains)

I half emptied the pond today, got in, first of all tried to suck anything out with another swimming pool pump- no luck. I then put a plastic pipe in, pushing it from the bottom drain towards the pump, but the pipe got stuck at an angle. At least I have a decent flow and the waterfall is running, but I haven't cleared the pipe. I tried with the high pressure water pump, but no further luck.

Any thoughts? It must be algae or leaves, but I do not have string algae currently. Or is the answer one of these plumbing/blocked drain guys?

Thanks

Albie

Hi Albie

I have cleared a few drains with polycop from the pump end. It is a bit flexible but not as soft as a hosepipe or irrigation pipe. When it can't go any further, you connect high pressure water. If that does not work and normal steel wire also does not work, your only option would probably be a plumber with those flexible cable wire connected to a type of a drill.

Good luck!

Thanks Paul

That worked for me and the water is running as usual!

Hi Albie, if you ever have the problem again you can purchase one of those 110 mm rubble washer like plunger that the plumbers use to unblock drains. They have a brass threaded end to which you can connect as many extension bars as you please, two should be more than enough for your situation.

All you do is fix your stand pipe in your settlement chamber, push the plunger into the pipe as deep as possible and quickly pull the plunger in a upward direction. This creates a tremendous suction on the bottom drain pipe and will remove anything in one or two applications. I do this on a weekly pond maintenance clean up as a preventive maintenance.
