| just from my experience with buying small kohaku.......the kiwa reminds of of the kiwa on the ones I had....the pattern was small and the kiwa was fading and smudgy.......but like I said, just what I think....may not be the case at all.
Nice job once again |

Nice job once again Hi Cliff, Thanks for your reply... ha ha..... I see what you mean..... Most small kohaku you can buy on the market are cull from koi farms, so the breeder know the hi will be gone.......etc.... So, it make sense that you think in that way..... But times will tell..... |

| Hi Guys, I have been reading 2 days now, on Koi, food, and filtration. Trying to catch up with you, and not ask any stupid questions again. I spent solid 30 hrs non stop educating my self on KOI, and will continue , but I still dont get some things, can not find explanation for them, and for me to make sense of things I need to understand them. So please bear with me, and answer my questions. I have figured out by my self what a step is, for I did not find info on it but there are many things that I would like to understand. So I would try not to over load you with questions, for I can easily do that, but please explain. Todays question: I understand that each Japanese name has a meaning: like Hi is red, gin rin is bling(???), I copied all the therms and am slowly trying to learn them. I understood there are basic names for Koi "tribes" like kohaku, showa.... What I dont understand is: Is there some thing like pedigree in Koi, I mean both parents are registered and well known for their progeny? Which will obviously increase the price of the fry. If I breed 2 fish for example kohaku and Utsurimono, and some of the babies come out looking like showa, some like sanke, some like the parents. Will the baby be called sanke, or kohaku ....depending on the way it looks? So basically my question is: Is the name given according to the way the fish looks? Is there any pedigree in fish, apart from the fact that i noticed u mention the breeder? How are the names of the types made? according to the way they look? In that case the name does not denote a type of Koi (maybe only the ones with single name), but just a description of characteristics, and there can be hundreds of varieties if u can call them that. Are there any recognized Koi varieties with set characteristics? What are they and how many are they? |

| The name of the koi or rather the variety name is based on colours and pattern.
There are strict rules to classify koi, not all koi are equal and not all koi belong to a variety. Some koi are just plain pet shop koi, they do not fit into any variety and they do not have the qualities needed either.
Having a good show quality koi and spawning with it does not guarantee show quality koi but you will get koi with the same colors as the mom and dad but you will find some black babies inbetween - those usually get killed because they are babies with the gene of the original carp that the koi was bred from.
When it comes to kohaku the people often talk about 3 / 4 or 5 step. That refers to the number of red solid stand alone spot on the koi. One usually only count the big solid spots. |

| Thanks waineb, I am beginning to get it. So this is how I should understand it:(please correct me if I am wrong) ----If I breed a Koi I can get all kind of results, and only culling will improve the reminder. ----A name of a Koi is a description of its characteristics, according to strict rules. ----Variety is a relative therm (according to preset characteristics present) and classification is for show participation and judging. ----There is no pedigree in Koi, only breeder reference. ----Is my Koi in the pond, part of the wild ones? it is pure white with black line like on both sides of the dorsal fin, or it is pet shop Koi? (I will post pics soon) ---- KAWARIMONO Description: the last of the non metallic classes this class contains all the varieties that do not fit in any of the over classes Are those the Koi that u mention as pet shop Koi? Are mine Kawarimono? ----I have given away lots of Koi, and ones I get nice Koi from you guys I will, give/sale all my home manufactured Koi. I just bought the plot next to mine, and I am planning to reopen my garden center. (I had 3 before). I am so terribly bored. So I thought I can sale some Koi from there...But not expensive ones, for people here will not understand good ones.I am the Admin for Garden and Home society Zambia FB, so I can slowly try to educate them. But the best education I think will be to make a new , nice Koi pond at the garden center, and let people see how a good expensive Koi looks like. That will be the best advert. But for now I have few people who want good Koi. Very few, but they are there. But for my self I want the most perfect kois, thats why i am learning (trying) so I know how to buy a good Koi. First person I will see is Costa, since he invited me, and I heard a lot about the quality of his Koi, but I would like to visit some other places with very good Koi. I saw here advert about buying a box of Koi from Japan from one of you here, might try that as well, as a start. But most of the ones I liked were sold. Now I dont know if the person who advertised them, can ship them/ rebag them for Zambia if I send him all the papers. That will be a good start for me before I come, and it will help me sound the market too. I am still scared to buy very expensive Koi, since I have not seen a real good Koi yet apart from pics and thats not the same. need to learn more. See some, so I know what to buy.
Now one of you here mentioned that they dont ship from Japan small Koi, but I saw some in that add (here). And from my experience in importing fish from RSA, I always used to bring very small fish. If it was big, I could put only one in a bag, (oxygen consumption). It is much easier to transport them when they are small. Thanks again.

| Dear Neli
I found that koi under 10cm do not travel as well on long trips as koi above 10cm.
If you wish to import koi, you will have to have an import permit and the seller will have to have an export permit.
There are not a lot of people who export out of SA because there are a lot of costs involved in getting an export permit. The state vets must for instance visit you regularly and furnish health certificates on the fish to be exported and only a few is prepared to go through all the hassles and pay all the fees.
Your best bet is probably to import directly from Japan once you are in possession of an import permit. |

| I imported aquarium fish on more than 10 occasions form RSA, from a aquarium fish wholesaler, some 10 years ago. did not need any health permits from your side, like for when I import my dogs from there. Currently a friend of mine imports aquarium fish for the shop he just opened, but he also imports from a wholesaler and he has no problems what so ever. I will check and let u know, but if it is classified as aquarium fish we dont need any permits, and thats not hard to do. I want very much to get some fish from Japan, but they responded to me, that ....If I remember well strictly confidential .... and referred me to you. Now it will be very pointless to ship the fish from JBG to Cape Town then back to JBG, when it will be so simple to rebag(put some oxygen) it in JBG and send it to me directly. The flight to Zambia is shorter than to Cape Town. The cost of transport will be very high, and the fish will get too stressed from such maneuvers. The second option is to coordinate with the shipment of my friend, and get the fish to his supplier, and send it with his consignment. But I can assure you that the requirements are determined by the country to which the fish is going, and we dont have any so far for fish imports. Let me check. I will give a call to the director of vet services tomorrow, he is a friend, and find out. But I am sure for now. Can you check from your side, maybe with the airlines, since all you will have to do is get them to the airport, if I give you the permit from here. Or those people from Japan send me my box directly.I dont mind paying your commission, since you are their rep in Africa. The only problem I can see is if there is not flight to Zambia Within few hours of arriving in JBG. But in any case I am coming soon, and For my self I would like to hand pick my fish. The consignment from Japan I wanted so I can test the market for expensive fish. |
