How many k-litres do you use on your pond per day or how often do you fill up and how much

I believe in a water change of at least 10% weekly on a mature pond, evaporation included. (1000 liters on a 10 000 liter pond) It also depends on the stocking density of the particular pond and the temperature (time of the year) In winter, I would do at least 5%.

On my pond. My auto fill up line adds about 120l a day. I say its evaporation others call it a leak.

I replace about 6000 liters a week in summer, i clean the filters twice in a week.

Backwash around 3x a week, plus some other tasks, take around 1500 to 2000l water......

If there is a water lost of more then 5 cm in 24 hours, there could be a leak!

yeah, thats why i say evaporation. Its maybe 1 cm.

0.01m x 6m x 2.5m x 1000 = 150L - So every 1cm in my koi pond is 150L

If a single drop of water splashes out or leaks out or evaporates out of your pond each second you will lose about 3.5 - 4 millilitres of water each minute. Nearly one teaspoon. This is nearly 240 ml per hour (nearly a coke can) or 5,760 millilitres (nearly 6 litres) of water each and every day of the year. That's over 20,000 litres a year.

A 20,000 litre pond that is never topped up, will be completely emptied in ten months by an "insignificant" leak or splash of 10 drops of water each second, somewhere in the system. And this is not taking into account natural evaporation. Evaporation is higher in summer and high winds.

The effect of leaks on the pond will depend on the volume. Larger ponds may not show minor leaks or splashes but a pond of 12,000 or 15,000 litres will. A pond of this capacity can have a surface area of about 4 meters by 3 meters and a depth of a meter. Loosing 10 drops of water each second will lower the surface by about 3,5cm each week. Looked at in another way, every second week this pond will loose about 8 - 10% of it's water. All you have to do is top the pond up as a 10% water change is recommended each week.

This may be better than driving yourself mad trying to find the leak.
However, it is always advisable to find any sources of leaks. Once found, the problem is 80% cured.

Thank you for your replies,I have a 27000L pond and have an automatic
ball valve that tops up automatically.When I left home at 06h00am this morning my water meter read 278319 and when I returned home at 17h00
meter read 279415 so its 1kl per 12 hours +- would that be to much on a hot day like today or normal

That sounds like a leak. Do you have a big waterfall?

I believe you have a leak. 1000 liter in 12 hours can definately not be evaporation.

Is the meter that you are reading the municipal meter or is it attached to your pond inlet only.
I was also having heavy water consumption problems at my house and I use borehole water at my pond (I think mine is also leaking a bit at present.)
I then aplied for a prepaid meter wich wonder above wonder was installed free within 2 months. Although it is early days things are looking a lot better and it is easy to read and monitor.

I take it for topping up with your 5 or 10% water changes or filling from water loss/evaporation you don't use water conditioner for the chlorine??
Doesn't it matter on that small quantity of water?

On my own system the top up water runs through filter cartridges before getting to the pond. Cartridges for solids, metals and chlorine.

Ernst runs a simular set of cartridges; his is for solids and chlorine.

Bobby also run a simular set of cartridges, cant remember what they are. I think its solids and then heavy metals.

where can I get the filters from?

Its the same filters as what they use to purify water for domestic house water lines. I bought mine from my koi dealer. If i would redo them i would only install 2 and no 3 as it really impacts the water pressure. Metal and Chlorine only.
