| Hi Guys
I have noticed in the last 2 to 3 weeks that i have been losing water at a rate of about 1.5 cm in a 24 hour period. The pond gets around 6 hours of sunlight and is 25000lt in capacity. Being mid winter and pond temp 10 degrees i find it strange to loose that much water. If it was mid summer a different story. My question is can you get *evaporation* in winter, is it normal ,and is anyone else also experiencing water loss in winter?
Thanks Anver |

| Hi Anver,
I also loose quite a bit of water in winter, due to evaporation |

| Hi Guys, Me too, but I think it is not evaporation it probably is a small leak as a result of the cold weather. Evaporation and warm weather go hand in hand. Easy to test though, just fill a bucket to a line, place it by the pond, and check it out. Will do mine tomorrow. Another posting by Einstein Sometimes we just get too technical and miss the small things |

| Hi Oom Neville,
Surely just leaving a bucket of water would not yield the same result as a pond that has a waterflow via a waterfall feature?
The water return would aid in evaporation, where I suspect a free standing bucket has nothing similar you will not get the same result.....maybe do a submersible pump flowing over a tile back into the bucket if you want something more accurate........get surface area also counts....interesting to see tho.

| Hi guys
Thanks for the replies so far. It makes me feel a little at ease as the last thing i want is to find that i now have to look for a leak. I will still monitor and see if there is changes as the weather patterns also change . Will keep you guys posted. Anver |

| That is a leak. With our current cold weather one would not loose that amount of water due to evaporation. You may loose 1.5-2cm of water on a warm sunny day with a wind blowing but not in winter. There is enough moisture in the air to prevent evapuration. lol, do you loose water on a rainy day aswell. What is the length and width of the pond? Length x Width x cm dropped x 1000 = liters of water missing. Now go and calculate the amount of water missing and think about it...if its 100l + then there is no way its evaporation... Splashing water does not = evaporation. Splashing water = a leak In my pond 6.5m x 3m x 0.01m x 1000 = 195 Liters.....thats alot of water to loose to evaporation. |

| All I have to say is be-friggin-careful....... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]and be ready for a worst case scenario if one is coming. Pond drained out completely in about 2 days. From 2 seperate leaks that came from who knows where...... |

| Hi Ogidni,
I tend to agree with you, Found that the cold weather opens up those fine cracks or places where only the sealer was doing the sealing.
Unfortunately I doubt if it will seal itself again when it gets warmer.
Will have to wait and see |

| Hi Martin That's serious. Have you at least found the leaks? I gather that you have because you refer to "two". Structural or plumbing? ..and what have you done with your nice fish? Regards Jack |

| Hi Jack
The one leak is a cracked pipe between the settlement chamber and the filter system. I thought that was the main problem till the pond itself drained out completely. Thank goodness its not a major structural problem and just a leak around the bottom drains. The water proofing is peeling off around it.
The fish are in a porta pool at the moment. |
