Biofilter Empty

I have a gravity bio-filter for koi fish. My question is at what level must the brushes (filter) be situated regarding the outlet of the filter , above or below the outlet?.

Is a UV light really necessary?

It depends on the type of filter. There are so many on the market. Upflow/Downflow etc.

On your UV question, I believe in a UV for the fisrt year at least.
Without, you will battle with green water.
