| Does anyone know more about the Hanna 5-in-1 water tester? They say it is easy to operate and very accurate. No calibration needed but you still need to add a solution to the test water. Do they sell it in SA? What is the price? |

| Hi Marius
I use one. Bought it directly from Hanna in Cape Town. Paid around R7000 for it. It's a very nice water meter for the very serious koi keeper. Testing takes quite a bit of time (around 30 - 40 minutes for all the tests). I don't use the ph test on it. Hanna has a pencil pocket digital meter which I use to monitor the PH twice daily. This ones need to be calibrated on a regular basis though as I recently learned! The ammonia test on the bench tester is not accurate when you use the dropper bottles. I got two 1ml syringes and 5 drops is equal to .2ml, after i used that I got more accurate ammonia tests. The nitrite test I've now got down to 0.00 and the nitrate test is between 10 and 30 depending on how much I'm feeding. Currently I'm preping for the show so I'm feeding lots and high protien so I'm getting nitrates (depending on the time of day) at around 35.
It's a great toy and I can recommend it!
Cheers Ernst |

I just keep a log book but since my pond has matured completely I only test when I expect problems or when I'm feeding heavily like now. I noticed they have a new one that can do up to 45 tests, I must point out that although this will be nice to have the liquids and powders you need to perform the test are almost just as expensive as the meter! You can also only but them in large quantities (100 tests) and they do have an use by date. JJ ad myself share the reagents to make it more economical for us. |

| Would you recommend a beginner like me to spend that much money on the C203? Currently I have a Sera Aqua test kit but since I work in Tanzania for up to 3 months at a time, my girlfriend must do all the testing back home. She says it is a pain to use. Do you think the C203 will be easier to use in the long term? |

For the girlfriends I recommend the dipsticks! They are not accurate to the T but will give an indication if something is 'brewing'. Believe me she will hate spending up to 1 hour testing your water every week. For accurate testing I would advise buying the NT- labs kit. The C203 is for koi and trout farmers and the completely insane!! |

| I just have to say; i hate the drop and tablet test kits...its time consuming and i always have to guess from the colour charts... for example is my oxygen 7.0 or 8.0mg/l or PH is it 8.0 or 8.5. I also feel like i can just aswell not test because im not sure in anycase where exactly im looking at. Isnt there a all in one digital meter than you can add one water sample press a button and let it test all the different things in one go? A bonus would be if it did not need reagents. I would love to purchase some type of meter that will be connected to the pond 24/7 and when i walk out to the pond i can immediatly see where all the water parameters are sitting....but i guess this will remain a wish. |

| Wayne. That will be my dream 2. It is easy to build something to measure pH, Temp and salt. You can display it on a screen and even set a minimum and maximum level with an alarm if it is out of spec, but for the rest of the tests it remains a mystery to me. Hopefully I will be able to find some info. Just imagine if I can build something like that, that all of us can share. Won't be easy but I am sure possible. The Koi industry is small and maybe no one else bothered about it before due to the small market. If I ever design it you will be the first to receive a unit to test out. That is a promise |

| There are several measurements you can take with a 24/7 probe. I've looked into it and it's quite expensive. The big 3, ammonia nitrite and nitrate remains a bit of a catch 22. The 'koi' industry might not be that big but the fish farming industry is pretty big. In many cases the fish being farmed is much more sensitive than our koi, just think of trout or marines. Hopefully one day we will get something that can monitor our water 24/7 at a affordable price!
I've seen probes for ph (with an alarm!) DO (with an alarm!) Redox Potencial |

| The HI 98129 Combo waterproof tester offer high accuracy pH, EC/TDS and temperature measurements in a single tester! No more switching between meters for your routine measurements. The waterproof Combo (it even floats) has a large easy-to-read, dual-level LCD and automatic shut-off. pH and EC/TDS readings are automatically compensated for the effects of temperature (ATC). This technologically advanced tester has a replaceable pH electrode cartridge with an extendable cloth junction as well as an EC/TDS graphite electrode that resists contamination by salts and other substances. This gives these meters a greatly extended life. Your tester no longer needs to be thrown away when the pH sensor is exhausted. The EC/TDS conversion factor is user selectable as is the temperature compensation coefficient (ß). Fast, efficient, accurate and portable, the Combo pH, EC/TDS and temperature tester brings you all the features you've asked for and more! Range pH 0.00 to 14.00 pH Range EC 0 to 3999 µS/cm Range TDS 0 to 2000 ppm Range Temperature 0.0 to 60.0°C / 32 to 140.0°F Resolution pH 0.01 pH Resolution EC 1 µS/cm Resolution TDS 1 ppm Resolution Temperature 0.1°C / 0.1°F Accuracy pH ±0.05 pH Accuracy EC/TDS ±2% F.S. Accuracy Temperature ±0.5°C / ±1°F Temperature Compensation pH: automatic; EC/TDS: automatic with ß adjustable from 0.0 to 2.4% / °C Calibration pH automatic, 1 or 2 points with 2 sets of memorized buffers (pH 4.01 / 7.01 / 10.01 or 4.01 / 6.86 / 9.18) Calibration EC/TDS automatic, 1 point TDS Conversion Factor adjustable from 0.45 to 1.00 pH Electrode HI 73127 (replaceable; included) Environment 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F); RH max 100% Battery Type / Life 4 x 1.5V / approx. 100 hours of continuous use; auto-off after 8 minutes of non-use Dimensions 163 x 40 x 26 mm (6.4 x 1.6 x 1.0") Weight 100 g (3.5 oz.) |

| The HI 98129 seems to be a decent meter. Phoned Hanna yesterday and this is the prices they came up with:
HI 98130 Combo (later model than the 98129): R 1875 Calibration + maintenance solution: R 280
The HI 203-02 Bench tester: R 6373 All the reagents: R 2758
Excluding delivery. Delivery 2 - 4 week’s ex-stock
Think I must convince my girlfriend that I will take her away on holiday if she keeps testing the water with the manual kit |

| I made a mistake by stating the HI 98130 is a later model than the HI 98129. It is not.
The HI 98129 measures EC in uS and TDS in ppm The HI 98130 will measure EC in mS and TDS in ppt |

| I've been running these for a while now. Must say they are 'very nice to have's'. The one display is doing ph, temp and TDS. TDS is a bit high but I've still got around 0.07% salt left since I treated the pond after the show. The other is ORP and I'm really happy that the level is running at 350mV as this points to a healthy water set up.

| Can I exchange one of my Koi for 0.9 lower pH and 7.3 higher Temp? We can negotiate about the TDS |

| Hi Ernst
