One of my friend spawn his Sanke in a heated tank at the +- begining of july (The coldest month in SA), and he give me some eggs, after few months of culling and rearing. This is the only one i am going to keep:

Tell me what do you think about this tiny little Sanke. Too much sumi? Bad quality sanke? Good sanke? Tell me what do you think.

Not bad for a home spawning. The hi looks a bit weak but it might be the photos, the hi is also too far to the back on the head we would like to have it a bit more to the front. The sumi on the shoulder is strong (Tsubo Sumi) that is good in young sake. There is also a bit to mach black on the little one for my liking. Ideally you would like to see three to four small black spots at +- 8cm but on the right place.

You comments are very correct, which i totally agree.

I worry about the sumi, i hope the sumi will not develop too much in the future.

Only about 3000 fry hatched from the eggs that i received from my friend, and this is the best one. So, i guess i don't have enough number of koi fry to choose from.

I will try again when my own spawn, and see if i can raise some high quality koi.

We only get 20 - 30 high quality sanke from a spawning of over 100 000 fry. Sanke is the most difficult to breed and that’s the reason why only a few breeders attempt it a year.

I heard that kohaku is easier than sanke, because kohaku don't have sumi. In kohaku breeding only need to look for colour, body structure and pattern. Maybe breeding kohaku would be easier for me. But i think i will still like to try some more breeding, because i think the process of culling and rearing of koi fry is really fun.

But thanks for your advance, by the way what other varieties of koi do you breed in your farm.

Firstly Kohaku (we do 5 spawnings per season Kohaku), Sanke (doitsu & Scaled), Showa (ginrin and wagoi), Hi and Shiro Utsuri (also a speciality), Ogon (Yamabuki, Purachina doitsu and wagoi), Ochiba (doitsu & Scaled - also a speciality), Shusui, Hariwaki, Heisei Nishiki, Kikukuryu, Kumonryu (speciality). We are busy developing Chagoi Utsuri lineage.
