Hi Bubbles

Need a better photo to really say but this is what i can make out from the photo.

This sanke has a little bit too much sumi at the back for my taste and it seems like there is underlying sumi there aswell, so i would be worried that the tail will turn mostly black.

There is also no Tejima in the pectoral fins that i can see, thats the black stripes usually found with sanke in the white fins.

This sanke is actually not bad but the sumi would bother me. It all depends on what you want to do with the koi in the end.

A good sanke needs to be good Kohaku without the sumi and a good bekko without the Hi.

Whats the price? If i had to guess i would say around R 950.

At the moment I want to start to build a better quality collection. I'm getting one or two show quality pieces later this summer but will post those pics when we get there.

As for Pricing this one is going for R 650

The main Idea behind me posting this pic is to get a better understanding on quality and selecting accordingly with personal prefrence also in mind.

Is that underlying sumi on the head?...if it is - its not a good thing.

If that is not sumi on the head then i would take a chance.

Ok this is what i have. It looks like a average good quality sanke at the momment...but if you really want to analyze it - here you go.

Good
White nose - Good
Shiroji quality - Good
Ojime - Good (The white gap that seperated the pattern from the tail)
Sumi very strong and sumi on white (Tsubo sumi) - Good
Tsuya - Good (Luster)

Demerits
No visible barbels
No Tejima
Streaky Ojima in tail
Hi in pectoral fins (I have read that this is bad, but this usually indicates a strong Hi)
Tobi-hi - Theres a Hi spot on the side that does not form any part of the pattern.
Scales do not stand out so this indicates that the koi does not have a big bone structure...do not expect to grow a jumbo koi.
Underlying sumi on head

Personal dislikes
1. The sanke has a sundan pattern but i feel the white gap between the first and second Hi pattern is to big and this will just grow bigger as the koi grows.

2. To much small sumi marks on the back, this could grow bigger with time causing a big blob of sumi in back

Im not going to go into Kiwa and Sashi as i can't see very well.

Sorry, i just have a english understanding problem here. Can anyone explain to me, what is "Scales do not stand out" mean?

Thanks.

Some koi if you look at them the scales are clearly visible individually - in this picture you do not really see each individual scale. Now that can either be the photo or the koi itself.

Tosai with clearly visible scales are a indication of a strong bone structure. A fish with a weak bonestructure won't grow very bog.

For example - look at the scales on this tosai.

Its difficult to see from the first photo - it can either be a poor quality photo or an indication of the kois bone structure.
