java moss Empty
PostSubject: java moss   java moss EmptyThu Aug 15, 2013 12:08 pm

Hi

in my setup i am planning on having 2 run off areas where the water from the main pond will run into before being pumped into the filters.

i am thinking about putting java moss in these areas and i wanted to know everyones opinion on this. i figure i will put plants int the run off areas as the water will pass through there so it can help balance the nitrites and nitrates and no fish will be in those areas so the plants wont be eaten.

also, is java moss a good source of food for the koi because it grows so well im thinking about keeping it as an extra to the natural feeding regime i have planned.

Hi u3
Dont think it will be a problem if you are able to maintain it. Post photos of your setup, this way we can give you better advice. Very Happy

Some people say plants only causes a mess.

I like plants but it needs to be managed properly.

thanks for the replies guys. Miya - no pics yet, this is all theory still.

i have an initial plan, but it will probably change once i get the scalled mock drawn. but basically the java moss will be in the 2 sump areas. and they are great at balancing nitrites and nitrates. and are not leafy so they dont give off too much big floaty leaves.. the water from this area will flow through the bio filter so the debris that gets through will add to the natural cycle and in theory keep the algae/bacteria/ph balanced.

Nardus - the reason i plan to put these in the sump areas and not in the pond is so that i can easily maintain without having to enter the pond. i am hoping the only maintainance would be to trim the moss from over growing. lol.

thanks. as soon as i have a definite plan i will post it for all to see.. and 1 point i have to make is that this is nowhere near to msot of your ponds. its only a 4000l. so its a tiny little display that will be in my tiny little garden.

yes just stop from overgrowing.

I also only had 4000l at one time before I went bigger.

My 4000l is now my quarantine.
Even tho I have my problems heating that up in the winter.
