To be quite honest, I don't like it. It is a showa who lost it's hi. No stepping stone pattern and unbalanced.

The red might go away completely and the head markings are good, but it will never be a show fish in my opinion.

Hi Paul, you are right the pattern is not great but the other qualities that count more than pattern is there.

The colour is good except for the red parts and the shiro and sumi is of very good quality and the body shape is also not to bad.

On a Koi DVD from Happy Koi, Hannes Uys mentions that he likes to see some hi appearing on a shiro utsuri as it indicates that there is a constant competition between the Hi and Sumi on the fish and that the sumi has to be sooo much better to actualy beat the hi.

Does Shiro Utsuris not come from Showa spawning?

Heres a post from another forum Koi-Bito

Quote :
Hi Dale,
Yes, tobi (lo quality stray red) hi is not that unsual on Shiro Utsuri. Modern Shiro Utsuri were developed from showa. Over time breeding shiro utsuri to shiro utsuri and crossing to shiro bekko has improved the quality and produced todays shiro's.

Showa breeding also produces some bbies without any hi that are sold sometimes as shiro utsuris. These koi are very likely to develop tobi hi.

Even with higher quaity Shiros the showa genetics arenot that far removed. It is not unsual to see some stray red develop even on high quality shiro's. The spot of hi might disappear by itself or might not. Depends on how large and how thick it is. A common place to see some tobi hi apprear is on the gill covers or the head.

If you want to take a chance and try and remove the hi - pm me and I will give you a few tips.

Hi Wayne

Yes, it does have positive aspects and it is a nice fish. I am purely judging it as a "show fish" in which case you have to be very critical, because the judges are going to be.

It is also only my personal viewpoint and preference and remember the good old saying, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Showa spawning do result in Shiro Utsuris, but I believe the best Utsuris comes from Utsuri x Utsuri breeding.

Personally, i feel that i should not show this fish because of the hi on it. It does spoil the overall effect.

I sold this fish, the tobi hi just got worse and worse...

Paul...thanks for your opinion back then...I have also learned something since then....One has to remember that when you put your koi up for comment you must accept the good and the bad opinions of other people and not have a problem with their opinions....you are the one putting the fish up to be scrutinized in the first place.
