I built this sieve basket this weekend to collect heavy waste in the settlement chamber.

Thank you Tommy, I used PVC angle as a frame and 3000 micron stainless steel mesh as the sieve. I installed this to take some of the load off my filters. I built a similar one about ten months ago on the front pond and works well, however I think this one is going to do a better job.

The stainless steel mesh was R1 200.00 and the rest of the material was approx. R300.00. I purchased 3.5 m of mesh but could have used less with proper planning.

Oom Costa you will need a BIG one for that big chamber. Where can we buy this sieve Colin?

I purchased it from Cape Mesh. I sure they should have branches in all the major Cities.

I'll have to find out tomorrow in PE.

Well this is the results after one and half days. Took me two minutes to clean it buy spraying it down with hose pipe.

I will have to do some modifications to it as there is too much turbulence in the basket as I am running two 0.45 kw pumps, so the waste does not have time to settle.

In hindsight, I should have made the sieve in a cylindrical shape, this way I would have only had one join and a base with no frame.

No Wayne, this fits into the settlement chamber over the stand pipe that comes from the bottom drain. The idea is to collect most of the heavy waste before it gets to the filters.

I think it is a great idea. The cilinder shape might work better as you said.

I know it will be hard to adapt to a SC, but where there is a will there is a way....I like the way the waste is collected.
I also saw on another forum people using shade cloth like material, but they made a basket on the bottom Infront of a vertical mesh....so that when the water hits the sieve the dirt drops in the basket....
I think David soon has one of those.
I am worried a bit about your mesh....it is a bit too fine...can block easily, after some time.
But I think the fact that it is so big might help.

Neli the idea is to remove the sieve on a regular basis, every second day or so, turn it upside down and hose it down. It takes two minutes and save you a lot of other maintenance.

Another silly idea I had is to make the sieve round, raise the BD outlet 50 cm....with a stand pipe, and put at the end of it a rotating arm, discharging water at an angle against the sieve, so that the pressure of the water hitting the sieve make the arm rotate, and unblock the sieve...
Or alternative....make the sieve rotate....but that I have not worked out yet.
I am trying to think of ideas in order to make my new pond almost fully automated...but just thoughts at the moment.
Also exploring the idea of airlifts instead of pumps....but need to make prototypes and test them first.
Even the samp and BD made the Japanese way, on a timer...
I saw a pond in Japan for a hobbyist and made lots of pictures...fully automated!
