Well I did my big clean up today and was amazed how well this sieve works. My settlement chamber, brushes and matting was hardly soiled. The biggest surprise was my sand filter, it was at least 70 % cleaner than usual.

I am going to remove all the brushes and matting and only use the sieve system, if necessary I will add two flat frames with finer stainless steel mesh which will slide in a frame across the width of the settlement chamber. To slide one of these frames out and hose it down will be so quick and easy. I continuously battle to clean the matting each week and above will make it so much easier.

Well the "Shit Hunter", "Poop Hunter" or "Poop collector " , call it what you may Laughing , is at it again.

I have built a inner cylindrical basket to slow down the turbulence and for easier cleaning. I now remove the inner basket while watching the fish feed each morning and hose the basket down. I pushed my luck and left the outer basket for four days before cleaning. The basket became clogged and the water level in the outer basket was 50 - 70 mm higher than the water level in the settlement chamber. It was so clogged that I could not lift it, fortunately it was midweek maintenance day and I had to drain my settlement chamber to remove the basket.

This inner basket works great and is very easy to remove, clean and take a load of the rest of the filter. I am very happy with the results so far.

I noticed that it even collects free floating algae.

Darling,
very nice and very clever...but I would have put inside just a plastic bucket with lots of holes....and full of plastic shavings...It will pick lots of rubbish...
What do U think about that?

Looks good Col and seems like not much debris is getting past it......however imagine this to become a pain in the rear with regards to maintenance\cleaning, however very effective!

I must say the sieve seems to work very well.

I have a settlement vortex that collects all the poop so i dont have the problem with wasting poop out. That is followed with Matala matting and then with a eazy filter but i must admit that i dont think mine filters out as fine solids as your sieve.

Cliff, there is not a filtering system that is maintenance free, unfortunately it comes with the hobby, if you want nice healthy and happy fish you must stick to a routine cleaning schedule. Skip cleaning your filters and you could regret it.
