| I see the Ochiba's has not been covered in this category. One of my favorite varieties because they are so tame, grow fast and especially the ginrin version looks very nice in a pond. Please post photos of your Ochiba. Herewith my 65 cm Ginrin male:

| Tommy, Why RIP? Are they dead? I bought two also, one gin rin and one normal...both nothing too special. But I like them a lot. Will post pictures as soon as QT is over. I also have some that I bred my self from gin rin soragoi and gin rin chagoi. |

| The word Ochiba Shigure means fallen leaves in Japanese which perfectly describes their glowing reticulated scales arranged in a position that gives the impression of floating leaves on water and trees with golden leaves reflected on its surface
Ochiba belongs to the Kawarimono group but I believe that they almost deserves a category of their own. Ochiba koi are a crossbreed of Soragoi, a grey koi, with a Chagoi, a brown koi. Both may be plain looking, but the Doitsu Ochiba has striking color patterns that have made it popular amongst breeders, as did the ginrin version which changes the almost "dull" brown or grey into gold/bronze and silver.
Some people would say they are a cross breed between Chagoi and Kohaku and the brown color of the Chagoi changes the white of the Kohaku into a grey color like the Soragoi. Some people would say that cross breeding with Kohaku only came in much later, to obtain a different colour in Ochiba. Maybe someone can enlighten us on this?
One of the reasons why they are so popular is because they make all the koi in your pond tame because of their friendly nature. It is a matter of monkey see, monkey do. My opinion, every pond should have an Ochiba, Chagoi or Soragoi.

| Admin, my baby gin rin ochiba has very dark brown spots. Almost Black. They are 2" now. Is that normal? Will they change? At first they were all over dark, and later some areas become light, gray like. But the sparkle is good on the gin rin. Some one told me to use male kohaku with female chakoi for breeding. I have also one soragoi baby, some benigoi, kohaku, sanke, showa and many chagoi...not a single shiro muji ...I had 5 spawns...but managed to kill most of them. It was a free for all spawn... The babies are less than 100, but very cute. I shifted them in the pond when The new fish came, so I can use their pond. |
