Controlling Algae with Hydrogen Peroxide Empty
PostSubject: Controlling Algae with Hydrogen Peroxide   Controlling Algae with Hydrogen Peroxide EmptyThu Oct 21, 2010 6:19 am

Hi,

Are there any members of this forum who use Hydrogen Peroxide to control algae in their ponds?

If so - which strength Hydrogen Peroxide do you use, how often do you apply it and at what dosage.

Regards,
Chris

Hello Chris

Julie de Villiers was always dead set against the use of Hydrogen Peroxide in a Koi pond and believed that this has a long term negative effect on the gills.

This is also the reason why I prefer to use PP at 2g/1000L max in a pond with a result that one does not have to add Hydrogen Peroxide to clear in an emergency, a water change will do the trick.

Bobby you must just remember that the crystals used to dechlorinate will also neutralize PP, it has a shorter latency than peroxide as well.

Chris I have heard of it being used and will try to follow up that source it was some time ago and they used it to clear up their selling pond's.

Hi guys,

That's good information - thanks.

I was just wondering if Hydrogen Peroxide has a long term effect on the gills then so would PP?

If a koi keepers uses it as a once off treatment to clear the suspended algae (green water) that would seem to indicate that hydrogen peroxide lasts a long time in the water if it affects the gills.

However -

I am definitely not in favour of any chemical being used continuously to control algae - but as a once off? Or perhaps every three months until the pond matures?

If koi keepers are using hydrogen peroxide to neutralise PP then if anything, the PP would affect the gills - but it is been used? (and killing a lot of koi ...)

It seems as if tropical fish collectors use hydrogen peroxide to control algae in their tanks - and tropical fish are far more susceptible to chemicals than koi.

Just thinking aloud ...

Chris

Hello Chris
I must admit, Julie is also dead-set against PP in a pond, she believes in a controlled 3 bucket airated PP dip system. Max 5 min or the minute the Koi looks edgy.

Hi,

I agree completely with Julie - PP is a deadly and powerful oxidising agent - it kills everything. It does have its place in the fight against parasites - but we always have to keep in mind that when you add it to the pond it whacks everything. You have to be spot on with the dosage. Also some of the residue is toxic.

This falls into my firm belief that there is no such thing as Koi pond medications - we only use poisons in controlled dosages!

But back to Hydrogen peroxide - IF hydrogen peroxide can be used to control the pea green algae that plagues koi ponds at certain times of the year and IF it is used as a once off algae treatment and as the hydrogen peroxide is a very reactive molecule (i.e. it reacts very quickly and then dissipates) - this MAY be a cheap way of controlling green water from time to time?

Chris

Yes this statement is very correct in all that it say's, I like to use it and have been doing so for some time. After reading about the slime city I will in future not bypass my filters. Only turn the UV off. That will also then remove the toxic residue faster.

Doc Johnson is also very clear on the use of PP.
