Hi Collin,

Zeolite is imported and also mined locally.

It is mined in Eagle Creek Mine in KZN.

Pratleys (of the pratleys glue fame owns the mine). You can buy zoelite in any shape, size, form or quantity from Pratleys in Krugersdorp. I don't have the number of their mining depot there any more but I am sure its in the telephone book.

Zeolite is a very interesting substance and works well in filters. A lot of people are using zeolite in sand filters as a media. It is lighter than gravel and therefore backwashes better as the bed lifts and breaks up.

Regards,
Chris

Most people say you can not use salt in your pond if you use zeolite. It makes sense since you use salt so re-activate the zeolite to absorb ammonia again. My concern is that you will need about 28g / liter to ‘clean’ the zeolite. That is 28kg/1000 liters or 2.8%. We as koi keepers use a maximum of .5% (in extreme cases) in ponds. Normally it is only 0.3% or less. This is only roughly a 10th of the amount to re-activate zeolite, so why does people say ‘zeolite – no salt’ ????

My second concern: I need to do a PP treatment in my pond since I was stupid enough to think my fish will stay healthy for ever. People warn you to bypass your filter system since PP will kill all bad things and your Bio media will be down to zero. I am sure this is true but what about the ‘baddies’ in the filter? I use a 4000L filter system in a 30000L pond, so what will happen after the treatment when I start using my filter again and release that amount of water back into my pond. Surely the baddies will still be in filter system even if I flush it before re-use

Hi -

If salt is used to treat koi it is usually used at very stong dosages in a seperate bath for a very limited time and if teh fish loose consiousness - tip over - they must be removed immediately.

Salt use in a pond - say 1 - 3kg per 1000L is not enough to release a lot of ammonia adsorbed into zeolite. At this low level only 0.1 - 0.3% of the ammonia will be replaced by the salt.

Salt used in a koi pond relates to assisting the osmosis during stress or disease.

There are detailed articles on salt and zeolite else where on this forum.

H Marius,

PP at the correct dosage is no problem and you should only switch your UV lights off.

If your pond has a lot of organic matter you have to know that PP will spend its energy in clearing that first, on day one and two.

Keep your filters running and backwash everyday to clear the toxic wastes that will be generated.

It is known that in some cases to clear the bio film or slime city it may be necessary to make use of sandblasting.

Marius, if you do PP correctly the baddies come out to feed and you get them with the next treatment, the next day.
If you do not do PP correctly don't do it because within a couple of weeks you will be back to squire one, and the whole treatment will have been wasted.

But please it is very important to dose correctly, that "ag nog n bietjie" could kill your fish.

I have been using PP for some time and have never had any adverse effects, yet.
