I was under the impression that a trickle tower or filter has it's inlet at the bottom.? So now we can govern the speed.

Chris is correct you cannot govern the speed of falling water, only the volume.

Trickle tower inlet on top and and gravity outlet at the bottom. Flow restricted with a catchment bowl on top and cooling tower block that change the water direction as it trickle's down toward bottom.

A trickle filter has the water sprayed or poured down from the top. It is basically a single unit with no floors or restriction on the way down - only the media and perhaps the odd grid if you are using crates. A very open media is used and the water splashes and breaks up on the way down.

So the water is straight in at the top, splashes down through the media and straight out at the bottom.

They a very efficient biofilters that also add a lot of oxygen to the water returning to the pond.

A bakki shower has water sprayed or poured down from the top and has a series of shelves or containers which slightly restrict the downward flow of the water. This restriction is really not much or the trays would overflow.

Also very efficient biofiltration and also adds a lot of oxygen to the pond water.

I have pictures of bakki showers but I am looking for a picture of a trickle filter.

Comments on the two pictures Pieter posted on trickle filters.

The blue trickle filter in the first picture.

They have over-complicated this design with a distribution plate that restricts the flow at the top.

The amount of water that you would be able to get through this trickle filter is limited by the three outlet pipes installed in this plate. It would be far better to simply spray the water over the top of the filter. There is not reason to limit the fow rate.

The second picture is a bakki filter.

The top tray is correctly packet. The media is spread over the whole tray. So the water will flow evenly through the all the media. They way the water is sprayed over the media in the top trap is very good.

The second tray with the shaped plastic media is also packet well and will have an even flow over the media as well. But I notice that they seem to have restricted the flow to the centre of the tray.

The third tray only has media in the centre - not a good idea as water takes the path of least resistance. This tray is a waste of space even though they have directed the water flow towards the middle. The media should be evenly spread and cover the whole of the floor of the tray - even if it is very thinly spread - and the water should flow between the trays as it does at the very top.
