| Hi Neville,
I like your way of thinking. Good one.
What compressor are you using to pump that amount of air to lift a sand bed and what pressure does it generate?
Air bumping a filter - any filter - is areally good way of cleaning it.
Albie, I also have zeolite so don't worry. I switched last year in March from sand to zeolite to try it. Air bumping works very, very well with zeolite. I would say even better than with sand/gravel.
Regards, Chris |

| Hi Albie/Chris
Thanks for your comments
No I don't think the Zeolite is a problem, I have not tested and maybe it will be a good idea to do a test I will contact Kim at Pratley and get some from them. I think Pieter is of the opinion that because it is light it will get whashed out.
Certainly will let you know on this one.

| Hi Chris, The compressor is just a cheapie from Adendorffs, it is a 50Lt 2Hp. We have been using this one now for around 2 years doing hobby stuff like spray painting, cleaning and now on my sand filter cleaning. One is only using it for a short while at a time, so it should last a long time. It gets up to 6 Bar pressure, which of course is much more than one needs on the filter. I have set it at 2Bar for the tests, as I think one should not exceed your pumps ability Chris the secret here is definitely the type of fingers and the placing of the air at the correct point and not the pressure so much. I think this should be regarded as the minimum size unit. |

| Hi Neville, I have been thinking about your idea of using a compressor to air bump a sand filter to assist with the cleaning - it would be interesting to do a cost comparison. Cost of compressor and a cost of a Jacuzzi air blower. All fittings etc included. Regards, Chris Jacuzzi Air blower on koi pond sand filters |

| Hi Chris,
I don' think there is much in it Chris, Not sure about the total installation cost of the blower.
The compressor system R1075.00 (see link below) for the compressor. The fittings kit R250.00 Excluding nice to have's IE Quick coupler. This excludes the new type fingers which is just a definite recommendation even if one should decide to use the blower.
Total R 1325.00 This is the basic minimum cost. installation of this is negligible.
I do not have the blower price which should include 2 valves.
But now I have to say that we are not really comparing horses with horses as the compressor system is quite superior to the blower system for one. The compressor is a dual purpose machine and can be used elsewhere as well. Then there would be the extra blowers needed for those with separate systems

| Vossie,
