Hi

Would their bee an great advantage to using this over normal filter sand biological medium, the site mentions a few, but i would imagine it to be better to use in a sand filter cause it would be lighter and therefor backwash easier.

Any advantage or disadvantages you can see.

Site: http://www.clinofish.co.za/

Cheers
Lee

would check price as well to see if its worth it.....keeping in mind that when you backwash etc you always loose or mess stones from the filter....

Hi Lee,

Pratley has re-packaged its zeolite into 25Kg bags for commercial use. It was available in 1 ton bulk bags and 50 kg bags before. Presumably they have screened it to a uniform size.

They have now twigged onto the fact that koi keepers have been using zeolite (5 - 6mm chips) in sand filters for years.

The zeolite will adsorb ammonia directly out of the water - very, very quickly. When it becomes saturated with ammonia it will become a "normal" bioconverter media and the bacterial colonies will grow on it.

It will also act as a good mechanical filter but being lighter than gravel the bed will back-wash far better than gravel. The pump will lift the bed easier and break up the biological/organic soup that forms a crust on the top.

Zeolite has an enormous surface area for bacterial growth.

Don't worry about salt in the pond and zeolite. If you are using salt the levels of salt in ponds will not affect the release / re-charging of the zeolite very much, if at all.

Chris

Hi Lee

You can phone Mario from The Koi Farm in Walkerville. 0119491839
Pratley Engineering did a full day session at his place I am sure he will have all the info and he also stocks it now.

It certainly does sound like Zeolite will become the thing to use in future.

Please make sure you sit down before you read the price.....

It's R400 for a 25kg bag.

Hi Chris did not realise you were in PE (your sinature does not say) but stil the price you mentioned sounds very high.

You should try and get it from someone up here then and have it sent on return loads?. There use to be a co specializing in this type of thing.
