In Bloem they sell ‘Tilapia food’ at R680 / 25kg. Apparently Aqua Nutro makes this food and the owner ( with about 6 very large Koi ponds on a farm ) claims that it is good food considering the price. Does anyone have experience with this food???

Is the sakura food not also made by chris neaves? So does Shogun = Sakura?

The 'Tilapia food' looks like a winter feed to me. Dark green. The owner of shop claims to be the best food at that price and his koi seems to be happy, but I am a Hikari fan - expensive,so trying to find more info from people what else to use. I feed about 10kg a month

10kg? Marius that sounds very little judging from the pictures that I have seen that you posted of your pond. I don't have half the koi you have and the polish a 20kg bag per month

Plenty died due to me fiddling with filter system. Only the ugly 1s still alive and one or 2 bigger 1s.4 small 1s in QT ( about 15cm) and a larger 30cm one. Since I am not home they only get fed twice a day and some special garlic / vitamin mix on weekends. I do agree, they need a bit more food and that is the part that worries me. If they grow bigger I wont be able to feed lets say 20kg of Hikari a month. At R1800 for 15kg it will become expensive and not worth the Koi. Must agree they love it but let’s be honest, does it justify feeding cheap Koi with food costing more than the fish?

No it doesnt. A ugly koi eats just as much as one from a royal bloodline. And feeding a ugly koi is not going to improve its genetics or make it any more beautifull.

Im not saying one should not keep ugly koi, im just saying its a waste of money giving them hikari.

Hi,

There are two local foods.

The Shogun And the Sakura, Both are made by Chris Neaves. They are Exactly the Same formula and the batches get done at the same time.

The only, ONLY , difference is that there is a low level of Spirulina added to the Sakura Food.

You can get Sakura at R600-00 per 20kg bag. It is also very fresh so could pretty much organise to get two bags down at one go and then use that for four months?

Thanks for the tip david, so sakura is for gosanke koi then as it contains colour enhancer. Im trying to stear away from colour enhancer as my collection is mostly black and white, shiro utsuris, so shogun is the better food for me then.

wayne,

It is an extremely low level and is pretty much a year round food.

That little guy on my avatar (my supreme at the baby show) and the kumonryu i posted are fed on it year round. There is none of the yellowing usually experienced, the formulae has been correctly worked out and fine tuned by chris and them.

That is all i feed pellet wise and then my seafood mix.

Hi Marius
Die nuwe shogun is blykbaar on par met hikari, ek gebruik al meer as 2 jaar shogun en kan regtig niks teen dit se. My groei is baie goed en my water word nie groen.
En die prys is bekostigbaar.
