Sandfilter help please Empty
PostSubject: Sandfilter help please   Sandfilter help please EmptyThu Feb 10, 2011 9:27 am

Hi everyone.
I am totally new to the koi pond scene, and found this site very informative. I need help with the filter system i have at the moment, as it clogs up at times.
I used a old jacuzzi mould for the pond. Setup as follows.
2x 50mm normal grated bottom drains, to a 0.45kw swimming pool pump (13500L/h).
From there to a 2 bag sand filter with (what the guy told me, who installed the setup), is koi pond grain.
From there, half to a uv light, and half to a bio filter, both draining to a waterfall, 2 venturi,s and a flow at the bottom of the pond.

My problem is, that the flow keeps on decreasing, until the waterfall and venturi,s stop totally. If i use the system on bypass, which skips the sand filter, the problem is gone, but then the pond gets dirty.
Also, one of the koi sellers in JHB told me, that the flow via my set up is too much, as the bacteria don,t have time to grow, because i am pumping 13500l water, from a 2000l pond.
If i backwash, problem stop for a day, but then, all the natural bacteria, which i want, gets flushed away.
I read about the "channeling" effect problem with the sand filter etc. I am planning to build a slightly bigger pond, next to this set up, but could use some advise please.

Can anyone tell me how to go about the setup, and is it possible to use a swimming pool pump with a settlement chamber and build in bio filter set up?
Can i build a settlement chamber, and use the pump to pump from the bottom drains, to the SC, pass some filter media etc, and then to the pump?
Bottom drains, settlement chamber, bio media, outlet to pump, from pump to uv and then to waterfall? Will the pump suck water from the Bottom drain, via all this areas? (Leaving the sand filter out of the system)
Can i build a home made system for bio filtering, and a settlement chamber, that will work with the 0.45 kw pump, and how do i set it up so that the pump don,t over flow the areas?
I have some idea on how it should work, and how to get someone to build me a home made system, but i don,t know how to use the swimming pool pump to connect the whole idea.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Lots of questions, i know, but heck, as i said, new to this, and hooked already. Smile )

Hi,

First of all the sand in the sand filter should be between 3-5mm.
You need to clean (backwash) regularly, about one every 3rd day.
Check the sand, if it is 1-1,4mm then replace it with 3-5mm sand. If you are using a normal swimming pool filter, the “finger” should be modified to accommodate the bigger sand.

I would suggest that you do not split the “pipe” before the Bio filter, like it is now, rather place the UV light after the Bio filter.
A bio filter should be cleaned once a year

The speed of the water over the bio filter media is no factor!

Using ball valves you could regulate the flow between the water fall, underwater return and the venturi’s ( I would also lift the venturis above the water line.)

Sandfilter help please Empty
PostSubject: Re: Sandfilter help please   Sandfilter help please EmptyThu Feb 10, 2011 3:17 pm

Thanks Pieter, for your input. I do backwash, and have to do it daily, at times. The thing is, i travel regularly, and would be away for days at a time sometime, which makes it a bit of a hassle for someone else to maintain while i am away. I don,t mind maintaining the pond, but i would like to have a lower maintenance set up.
The sand is about 4mm in diameter, but it is extremely dirty, and full of organisms and fish poo, when i open it, even after only a day or two running. I removed it a few days ago, cleaned it very well, and had the same problem with output flow, two days later.
I am not sure of how the filter looks on the inside. I do know that we installed a pool at the same time, and though this is a smaller, grey filter, the pool one had white flat bars at the bottom of the filter. They do look the same, the filters, except for size.

The UV and bio filter set up was done by the guy that installed my filters and pump, after the uv light was damaged because the flow of the water, was too much. (Got water into the light, pushed past the O rings at the side).
I also did the Newbie thing, and over stocked the pond, i am sure, and being a woman and all Very Happy i don,t want to give the children away.
I decided to build a bigger pond with concrete next to this one, and solve that particular problem, but i have no idea how to go about connecting, and using my current pumps etc, with the new pond. Hence the question if i should build a settlement tank, and will i be able to use my pump etc with a settlement tank.
I wish i could draw u a picture, to make it clear, too new to explain the things i need to ask.
Any help and ideas on how to build the pond, and set up a low maintenance filter would be greatly appreciated.
PS, the venturi,s is at the top of the pond, with air flow to the water areas.
I will take a few photos, and post it, if it would help with the general idea on how to go about improving and building the new pond.
Thanks for your time.

Sandfilter help please Empty
PostSubject: Re: Sandfilter help please   Sandfilter help please EmptyFri Feb 11, 2011 1:10 pm

Charissa,

http://southafricankoi.11.forumer.com/viewforum.php?f=33&start=0

"air compressor"

Sien: http://southafricankoi.11.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=949

Hi,

Ek het dieselfde probleem as jy ondervind. Ek het so jaar terug my totale filterstelsel oorgedoen en sederdien geen probleme met die stelsel nie.

Ek sien jy is in Pretoria.

PostSubject: Re: Sandfilter help please   Sandfilter help please EmptyTue Feb 15, 2011 8:01 pm

Pieter,

3 X speck koi sandfilters in parralel gekoppel.

PostSubject: Re: Sandfilter help please   Sandfilter help please EmptyThu Feb 17, 2011 5:34 pm

Hi Lanie

Welkom by die forum.
