Quarantine pond Empty
PostSubject: Quarantine pond   Quarantine pond EmptyFri Mar 26, 2010 10:33 am

Hi Guys,

Ok I want to build a quarantine pond sort of like this:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Here is a quick layout of what I want it to look like:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I don't know wether I should do a bottom drain or use a pump, either way the piping will connect to a barrel/drum filled with filter material. The water will then flow through a pipe as the picture shows and be returned to the pond.

It is goign to be subdived, with netting

Please Help-

How should I seal the pond?
Does anyone know what type of wood I should use?
Where I can buy a drum/barrel

Should I install two uv's?

Thanks Allot,

David

The box you're looking at isn't sealed with a sealer, the inside is lined out with a plastic liner. I'm assuming any hard wood (pine etc) should do just fine, just don't try press wood! Look at the 1st pic and you'll see that the actual side walls aren't that thick, but it's got strong re-inforcing. You'll still need to treat the wood with wood sealer as there will definately be water splashing on it.

With this type of setup I'd rather go for a submersable pump, but that's just my opinion.

Suggestion from my side. I am using a 2500l JoJo tank. Have left the tank intact, has the opening of about 70cm and all the connections for pipes top and bottom, and the nice part is you can move it easily.
Have burried the tank half way and have a metal structure so the filter boxes do not stand directly on the top of the tank.
So far no problems its working 100%

Hi Dave, SAS on this forum was building one himself 2 years ago or so. I think its called a FRP tank. I tried looking for pictures but i think the pictures and the thread is on the other SA forum.

You can also put lockable wheels on... That'll be great if you want to be able to move it around.

Rhino plastics maak dit op versoek volgens grote, vorm en dikte. Well, i know the one in PE does. Otherwise you can just buy a role of plastic .250 micron from Builder warehouse.

Proper timber is very expensive in SA, you would be better of to have a steel frame welded in the box shape and then have some press wood made cut for support to fit inside the frame. Then take some poliester like what they use in surf board bags to line the interior out and then add the black plastic.

Otherwise why dont you just have a elongated transport vat custom made for you. Much less trouble actually.

Hi Dave
In my experience a QT has to be able to stop and start quickly on demand. I made a Bakki shower out of plant holders hanging over the QT. When in off mode with media, even after months, I need max two days to run some virkon, salt, weak PP via the media, some water changes and filters is up to standard to handle new Koi. I keep Matala in my first Bakki and bio balls with some siporex in the other two bakki's. To date no problems with Koi in QT tank running only on Bakki filtration.
