| Went to where I buy my koi food and decided to buy some new babies for my new pond. Still abit nervous with a new pond so decided on some juvies, felt I needed some youngsters roaming about in my pond. Wife had the camera overseas with her so now that it's back decided to take some pics. Only managed to catch 3 of the 5 I bought. But all pretty much the same, which from what I know so far and from what the koi breeder said are all shusui's altho the one I have a feeling is more asagi from what I've read and seen here....please correct me From pics i've seen this is the one I suspect to be more asagi that shusui My other shusui's... They're about 6cm's currently and seemvery happy Please advise on what they may be exactly and what you think of them.......or is it tooooo early days to think anything of them??? |

| Hi Cliff I sincerely hope your dealer advised you to QT them first. Also new pond needs time to settle in first and it's not a good practice to start adding Koi. Making use of old mature filters will shorten the NPS period but still needs a couple of months to be fully functional. |

| Hi Bobby,
I spoke to him extensively about adding his new fish to my fish pond. As I have bought my fish from him and never had issues before so I trust his advice. He has his ponds tested extensively and said that he often does scrapes and that his ponds are parasite free and that I'm more than welcome to do any tests myself, and since I moved all my old pond water into my new pond I didn't have a QT facility. |

| I did not ask him about the risk as I've already done extensive reading on all the issues beforehand.
I asked if I could QT them at his premises and take them a week later but was decided that he is absolutely sure there is nothing to worry about.
Does everyone QT, what if there are people without QT facilities???
I know the risks and honestly feel comfortable with adding them to my current setup. I did dose the pond with salt and that blue bacterial\parasite liquid during my run in period and again before I added the new fish.
The water temp on the pond also has not been above 10 degree's, often lately being alot less than that so also thought this to be safe as I have read that parasites are only more active in temps over 20 degrees.......or not??
Besides the issues which we are not sure are an issue could you advise if the fish I chose are any good??
thanks |

| Cliff, Thanks for the compliment..........but I am no expert!!!! The photos is not that good, but the Koi in the first photo is a Asagi and not a Shusui! A Asagi is a “full scale” (Wagoi) Koi a Shusui is Doitsugoi See if you can take better photos. |

| Hi Cliff
Your babies are still very small to judge, especially from that photos.
Herewith the general(basic) rules for judging Shusui and Asagi.
The first Rule for all varieties is: the KOI should have excellent body conformation.
Selecting ASAGI
Rule two for the asagi is that the upper back should show the beginning of a light blue net pattern. The scale interior will be a muted light blue with a white/gray outline creating a beautiful reticulated pattern.
The next consideration is the head should be clear and perhaps as white as possible.
The fourth rule allows the lower half of the KOI to the midline, including the gill plates, lower jaw, fins and tail to be red or orange.
The last rule for asagi is that the KOI must posses overall elegance, quality, and an imposing appearance.
Note: The red tends to move up the back, as the KOI grows older. Asagi's that are dark blue as a small KOI may be almost black as a mature KOI.
Selecting SHUSUI
Rule number two deals with color: the head should be clean and clear light blue/white with no specks, the dorsal half, lateral mid-line up, of the body is a clear dark blue with no specks, and the ventral half, lateral mid-line down, of the KOI is a beautiful red.
The pattern is considered next. The dorsal scale line should be straight and uniform. If there is a lateral scale line, the scales also should be straight and uniform and centered along the lateral line. There should be no muda-goke or unnecessary random scales anywhere on the body. This KOI must have blue scales.
The last rule for shusui is that the KOI must posses overall elegance, quality, and an imposing appearance. |
