This a very nice newly build pond of Barry Martin in Durbanville. 30 days old, 35 000 liters. Well done Barry!

He did the shallow area around the pond to prevent his dogs from falling in.

Not finish yet, a deck and plants still to come.

Well done Barry, the shallow area is a very good idea should one have the space, this should also be a very nice for feeding Koi up close. Very Happy

Koi keeping is alive and well with new ponds, tell us more about the filter system

Is there no chance of the koi "beaching" themselves on the shallow bit?

They will wiggle themselves back. It is sloping down and will soon be slippery due to algae growth.

It might create an ideal spot for herons to launch an attack, but Barry's dogs are constantly on guard.

Dis nou 'n lekker plek vir die reiers en hulle vriende om te staan en vis vang,

Miskien sal 'n " No fishing" kennisgewing bordtjie die ding doen!

This looks great but I have the same concerns about the predators. Another thing that I am thinking about ... that shallow water is not circulating fast so in Summer the water will heat up a lot there and it might become a serious source of algae growth.

Hi Colyn, I agree with you and they do have problems with algae, but the main reason why is has been done that way, is to accommodate the blind dog who might have fall in the pond.
