Went to buy some new fish today, we going to be filling up our new addition(10 000L). we know what the doitsu shusui are but we really liked the look of these two. Very metallic white with orange and black specks, they are young fish about 15- 20cm. They were imported from Malaysia. We were silly not to ask. Any ideas oh learned ones:)

I do not believe that I asked what they are worth! I asked what variety they were!

Dear Jbaygril its difficult to classify koi like what you have i do agree that pieter acted a bit insensitive. .

When you breed koi lets say kohaku (koi that is red and white) not all of the babies will fall under the kohaku's classification because some will be completely red are other completely white and sometimes you even get completely black ones aswell. Usually these babies that do not fit in a classification will be culled to preserve the classification but alot of breeders do not cull them and sell them on to pet shops to make some money.

The classification is a man made standard. Now coming back to what you have there. I would say that you have 2 koi from a sheshui spawning and 2 from either a ginrin ochiba shiguru or some tipe of metalic spawning. Its difficult to say because the fish below does not really fall into a clear classification.

In the end what matters is that you enjoy your hobby after all if you did not enjoy the hobby or liked the fish you would not have posted them on this forum.

Good luck

Hi jbaygirl,

The two metallic koi are definitely not kujaku. All i can say is at least one of their parent is a metallic koi.

But i do agree with Wayneb that they are more related to the metallic Ochiba and Ginrin Ochiba.

But in Japan for koi that we don't know what variety they are, we usually called this type of koi as "Unique koi".

By the way, doesn't matter what other people say just buy and keep the koi that you like.

regards,
SAS

Hi jbaygirl,

I take a photo of one of the page about "Unique koi" in a book called "Nishikigoi Manual". "Nishikigoi Manual" is a popular and easy to understand koi manual in Japan.

Look at the koi in the picture and i hope this can help you to understand more about the term "Unique koi".

The words in the picture are so small, so i will type it here for you to read:

"These are "one-of-a-kind" koi that are neither officially named nor are they able to be reproduced at this time. Perhaps they are a glimpse of what the future of Nishikogoi may hold."

I hope this answer you question.

regards,
SAS

Sas and Wayne, thank you for the positive and uplifting input:)

Sas thanks for taking the time to photograph and upload those photos. I noticed at least 3 "unique Koi" that I have in my pond.

We love our hobby and are always looking for something different to add to our growing collection.

Hi,

I did use the word “sorry”!
Quote :
Sorry to say but this is very low grade Koi...................

What makes me mad is that some dealers lie to “newcomers” to the hobby. By telling that these fish in question were imported from Malaysia is a lie, and if they were imported by someone, that someone is an idiot! These are Dagoi!

So, jbaygirl do yourself a favor and visit this website;
http://www.kodamakoifarm.com/lover/seek.php
or
http://southafricankoi.11.forumer.com/viewforum.php?f=26

There you can learn about all the different varieties regarding Koi.

Please note that a unique Koi is a “once-off” Koi with some quality! Visit this website;

http://koi2day.com/forum/index.php?topic=898.0

Please don’t be fooled by so-called dealers!

The only two that can possibly categorized is the top and left one. The top one is possibly a Doitsu kujaku and the left one might be a ginrin Ochiba if you really wish to place it in a specific caregory.

The blueish one will have Asagi/Shusui blood but is a crossbreed of a few varieties.

Thanks for the info Pieter, We are not in line to buy the koi's we really like - very expensive, so we tend to buy what is pleasing to our eyes. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When I post the pics of some of our"better" fish, let me know what you think:)
