I have been asked the question on so many occasions, what is the difference between local bred koi and Japanese koi?

Apart from the obvious, they are in a different class. They grow faster, they grow bigger, their colours are more intense, everything about them are just superior, and I believe that the gap between them and the local breds gets bigger and bigger as time goes by.

Every year, their qualities improve dramatically. Based on their superior breeding stock which they will never sell to Westerns, I doubt it if we will ever be able to beat them at any koi show.

The colours are definately more vibrant than locally-bred koi.

My friends who are not koi keepers are able to tell the difference between my local and Japanese koi. I will never again buy local koi. They cost the same and eat as much as the imported fish and they take up the same amount of pond space.

If the locals weren't already part of the family I would have gotten rid of them a long time ago.
