Today, one of my friend in Japan phone me and tell me that a well know koi farm in Japan has been tested to be KHV positive.

So, just be careful if you are bought Japanese Koi recently.

I wont panic to much about it, it will be posted on the I.N.P.C website after they had time to confirm and investigate the matter. - http://www.japan-nishikigoi.org/disease.html

So far there is nothing.

Hi Yoshi

I hope this email finds you well.

Could you please confirm a KHV out brake in Japan and which breeder is involved.

Hi Collin,

I got in touch with some key player in Koi industry and found that two breeders
might be involved in KHV recently, one is “Koi no Yohei” in Aichi prefecture
and another one is “Sakai” in Hiroshima.
Both are located very far from Niigata (as you know), and there is no reports at
all about KHV among the breeders in Niigata.
I will keep investigate to get more detailed information and will let you know
as soon as I can get some.

KHV news update:

In Sakai Fish Farm 1 green house and 4 mud ponds have been proved to have KHV.

Last night, they kill 98 large koi. And most of them are brood stock.

Received from Yoshi Takada, Director, INPC

Quote :
We are carefully investigating the status at the moment, and intend to put some notice on our website tomorrow.

The most important issue for us is to confirming that there is no influence to all the breeders in Niigata.

Thank you very much for mentioning anyway.

June 6, 2008 Koi.com - Nozomi Young Koi Show Cancellation

It is with deepest regrets that we are announcing the cancellation of the Nozomi Young Koi Show which was scheduled to be held on June
14th 2008 at Pan Intercorp
in Kenmore Washington.
We have just received word from one of our major suppliers in Japan, that Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) has been confirmed in one of their mud ponds.

Pan Intercorp is an industry leader in quarantine, testing and health management protocols, and we take the threat of KHV very seriously.

In view of our close relationship with this breeder and the large number of koi that we have from their farm, we feel that it is only prudent that we re-test all our current inventory for KHV before allowing any koi to enter or leave our Kenmore facility.

We anticipate that re-testing our current inventory from this breeder for Koi Herpes Virus antibodies will take between two to four weeks.

We understand and regret the inconvenience that this cancellation will cause to those who have made travel plans to attend the Nozomi Young Koi Show, but until we can complete the re-testing, we feel that this is the proper action to take.

Pan Intercorp http://koi.com/news.php
Note: This is a supplier of All Japan Koi Show high quality koi in the U.S. that notes on their website "America's premier importer of quality Japanese Koi."

Points to Note:
-Several Instances of KHV have been identified in Florida from a dealer who isolated the disease prior to distribution of the infected fish and from a hobbyist with infected stock purchased most likely at an AKCA show from Japanese supplied stock. Again, the source of these KHV findings were not from a domestic source. It is possible the koi found in Florida came from the same source described in the Pan Intercorp letter.

-Pan Intercorp notes they already test their fish and will test them again. Should that satisfy customers concerns? Shouldn't customers that have recieved fish from this supplier be notified? Where is the indepent verfication to protect the public interest and fish health?

-KHV positive koi are in the imported koi distribution system in the U.S. and now a potential source has been identified. How many other khv positive koi may have been distributed throughout the U.S. from this source? Using the metaphor of public health threat one would expect the points of distribution from this Japanese supplier and their customers be identified to curb the spread?

-How many further points of distribution of infected fish, carriers of this disease, etc. might we expect from these incidents through club fish auctions, fish rescue redistributions, etc? Is real accountability even desired?

-If Pan Intercorp is or is not following all the protocols of the proposed AKCA Best Health Practices program should'nt this case be of some significance as a case study in how the program can best serve the community?

Possible Courses of Action:

-Brainstorm and consider the myriad of ways you can reduce your risk of KHV exposure. Discuss this among your fish keeping peers in your community and clubs.

-Talk to your dealer and other possible fish suppliers about their sources, methods of distribution, and management practices including quarantine protocols (this includes koi clubs if you purchase fish from fish auctions, adopt them from fish rescues, etc)

-Obviously, make sure you quarantine new fish (each purchase quarantined in separate batches if from separate supply sources) for the appropriate times at appropriate temperature and for expensive fish purchases ask for documentation on their testing for KHV.

-Demand accountability if it isn't forthcoming from those in the distribution chain linked to KHV. This can be done in a variety of ways through pressure brought individually, through clubs and other groups impressed upon the dealers, scientific community, and regulators.

-Limit your new sources of new fish possibly to include possible consideration of using only tested closed system domestic sources.

At the Koi Club of the Air we seek to work with the hobbyists, industry, scientific, and regulatory communities for the health of our fish and the hobby.

Please note, there are three Sakai breeders.

Sakai Fish Farm who has the KHV problem, is unrelated to Toshio Sakai (Isawa Nishikigoi Center) and his brother Toshiyuki Sakai (Yamamatsu Koi Farm). "Sakai Fish Farm" is run by Hiroji Sakai.
