I've been researching the site for many a month now and became a member in January 2012. I haven't posted anything up to now so thought it is about time I make my acquaintance
I started my pond way back in 2010. A pig (if you afrikaans)pick, shovel and a case of beer... the day ended up with a big hole in our back garden and a verrryy enthusiastic koi keeper to be
. I was busy revamping our "fix me upper" so I had time to get my plans for the pond together. The wife used this to her advantage of course... so I was the "laugh at the braai" for quite some time
Nevertheless, I took to this site and began with R&D.
So I was ready, two years later and two years smarter, yea right
I decided to start off small, around 6000L but soon realize I made a big mistake! 25000L+ was the way to go. Unfortunately I was limited with space and since I was "gatvol" of all the remarks like " so jou visse swem dat die stof so staan" I decided to stick to 6000L for a start. I can always build a bigger dam later on once I understand the basics of fish keeping. Nevertheless, my pond was finished December 2012. My fish, plants and water are all in excellent condition and this was my first attemp
I have around 20 koi and still a couple of testers left - goldfish and comets. I also have one common carp and two bass just for the fun.Oh, my ponds size is more around 9000L than the 6000L I planned.
Thank you all for the brilliant advise and knowledge you posted on this site. It helped me to build an excellent koi pond right the first time!
