Fish not eating !! Empty
PostSubject: Fish not eating !!    Fish not eating !! EmptyWed Apr 06, 2011 8:36 am

Hi All,

My fish have not eaten anything for the past week....Im not sure why...
About a week ago I added 3 additional fish to the pond that I bought and have sold my biggest one, around 65cm...
After that all the fish seem frightened when I approach pond and are not eating.

I would understand if the "new" fish were not eating as they might be getting used to their new environment but all the fish are now not eating.
I have not done any water changes and did a pH test last night which seems normal...around 7.5

I dont have a thermometer as I wanted to testthe water temperature, but when putting my hand in the water it doesnt seem to be very cold...

Im confused Rolling Eyes Any advise will be appreciated.

Did you quarantine the new fish?

are any of the fish showing the following?
gasping at the surface
lying on the bottom with clasped fins.
just lying in the return flow.
swimming listlessly on their own?

Is there anyone you know that is an old/experienced koi keeper that lives
near you that can pop round and have a look see.

what size is your pond?
how many fish are in there?
what filtration are you using?
have you added any chemicals or treatments?
are your pumps running 24/7?

None of the fish seem to be enhibiting any of those symptoms....They seem to be swimming around as per norm.
I do think however that there is a problem with my filter.....Gets clogged up...so need to check and clean it.
I have seen poo floating around recently

Im buying a water test kit later and will check levels as well....

HI All,

Looks like the reason for this was overstocked pond causing high ammonia levels....My existing filter was to weak to cope.

Yesterday I spent the day making myself a large homemade filter bounce and doing a 30% water change.
Already have seen improvements in fish behaviour cheers Will try and feed them later to see if they will eat

Hi,

Better test the water!
If there is a high ammonia reading (max. 0,02mg/l) stop feeding and do more water changes (10% per day)
The Nitrite reading is due to go up, check that as well (Max. 0,2mg/l)
Ad salt to help with the Nitrit spike (3kg per 1000lt water)
