i bought this fish a while ago got told its "show quality" is this fish a keeper?

Looks like a fair ginrin ochiba........pic doesn't show much.

Whether it is of show quality or not...depends what else is there on the day.

Wouldn't not be worthwhile to take to a show, looks ok to me

i like gin rin ochiba a lot. I saw one at the show just now, and it won many major prices. it was huge 97cm...and every one said it is the most beautiful Koi at the show.
they are the friendliest fish, and teach all your other fish to be friendly.
they grow huge if of good parentage.
i like your other fish too. Is it a ki shusui? if it is , it is a rare fish. can U post a better picture.

u right they are very nice fish 2 own the really not shy! um it is but i think ki shusui are also ment 2 be orange on the bottom?? had this guy for a year now but he got some kind of paracite witch ate the bottom of his jaw and i only noticed it late so he battles to eat and is growing slower than his friends.

@ Kobus i bought her last year for about 350 if i remember correctly but she was alot smaller then! i think shes around 35cm

It is definitely a shusui, but the zip is not even, and balanced.
Is it red or yellow on the bottom?
If it is yellow it is a Ki....

haha um.... no it is blue at the bottom. its not a show koi this is a pond koi!! i bought it wen i did not know much about koi and i saw a blue one and thought great!! but he still makes me happy

That is all what the hobby is about, to make us happy!
That is all that matters, but I used to get offended when the boys used to spit on my fish when i posted pictures....They were very right to spit....but still did not feel good, so i decided to go to japan and but Koi that are not suitable for spitting...but I am sure I am sure i came back with plenty that deserve bad comments...I dont know how to chose much yet...maybe next time...

Thats exactly right if u not competing you should just get fish that you enjoy looking at in your pond. obviously it would be nice if you can say u have prize winning fish but i dont think thats the most important

Spot on.....exactly right......thats how it should be.

From my point of view, when I started getting serious about koi and wanting to show and have people critique my fish etc etc thats when I started enjoying less about the hobby because you become so consumed with things that take away the enjoyment.

Not saying that it's bad to be like that, the competitiveness is what some people want from the hobby and thats what keeps them going.....when you want to get to showing etc then it's all about what other people think that you worry about and that's when I realised I wasn't enjoying it as much......thats why I will rather just enjoy my colelction at home for now.

The bug may bite to show again, but will hopefully be in a better position to enjoy it more then

My Koi are my pets. The reason I want show quality is not to show, but because they look better when they are grown, and U are not embarrassed to show them to people that understand how a Koi should look like.
I dont have where to show.
For me they are beloved pets, that I can not part with even if they are no longer looking good. They are part of my family.
I will just keep building ponds...and keep them all. Can not sale them....tried and failed.
Showing is a nice part of the hobby. Makes it more interesting.
I deliberately decided to buy varieties that are looking good to me, and not what other people like...like I would prefer a nice gin rin goshiki than a showa...it looks prettier to me, and I would enjoy it more.
I am glad U also look at the Koi as a source of enjoyment...

some more of my babys i got over the weekend. was told that they were imported from Japan?? i dont know if u can tell from a photo but if anyone can tell me if these were bred here or there id love 2know.

I think it will be very difficult to determine if the Koi are from Japan or not especially from photos.
My advice to you is, if you want Japanese Koi then buy them from dealers on the forum like Sakura(Costa)Koidepot(Lionel),Pongoi(James),HappyKoi(William) etc. In Pretoria
there is Orient Koi (Collin) just not sure if they are selling koi anymore.
I like the big Sanke,Kujaku,and Tancho.The one right of the big Sanke not so good for me as well as the GinRin.
This is only my opinion, its your pond no matter what others say as long as you are happy

Did U buy your Koi from loolilocks? I think I saw that budo goromo there...
Loolilocks sales koi from Izrael...not Japan...
They dont look to me as if they are from Japan...but then one can never be sure...
The transport from Japan is more than the cost of an average Koi...so I dont see a dealer bringing some of this Koi from Japan.

As Joeskoi said! If you want Japanese koi it's best to buy from reputable dealers. Anyone can claim that a koi is from Japan & you'll never know better. They know by saying it's from there they can in essence up the price of the koi. Not saying this is what happened here, but just be careful.

There's a lot of knowledgeable people on the forum who are more than willing to give advice, like the one Joeskoi mentioned. They've been to Japan, they know local breeders & dealers so ask them.

Which breeders are those koi's from? What size are they?

i did buy them from lollilocks, they say the import from japan, israil and thailand??? that is what got me wondering i got these at a really goo price so i thought they cant be imports.. i dont mind locally bread fish in fact i like 2 think that buying locally bred fish might help local breders improve there breeding skills. the size is between 15 and 25 cm i think never really checked ill messure when i move them into the new pond. The reason i want to know if they imported or not is because i want to know i can trust whoever is selling me my fish. Neli,Chris what do u think of the fish??

Just my opinion but the only half decent one is the sanke on the left although the red doesn't seem particularly strong.

On tosai U look at pattern body shape and skin quality....
Pattern first...but the other two are also important....Pattern is not good!
Body, skin hard to say from this pictures...
But if they are from Japan, which I doubt very much, then they are chosen by a "dealer" who knows nothing about Koi...
A dealer spends lots of money transporting the koi....some time twice the price of the Koi...he needs to sale it and they are experts...they will never chose this Koi for resale...because people who know...will never buy them...

I buy what I like regardless of the price...I have a koi for R10...and koi for R10000...I think for the price of R10...I will get lots of Joy watching it...If U dont show buy what U like...The price is not bad...Did U see what I bought at the show for R1000...5 koi...shiro..kohaku snow asagi yamabuki and goshiki...
It is a good buy if U like them and they make U happy!
Sorry but I dont even know what variety this koi is...I can not say much...maybe the boys can chip in...
