Hi Costa. I will take some tomorrow when I take the workers out to the farm. See the thing is, I need to get up in the air with the front scoop of the TLB and I'm scared of heights in funny situations like that Embarassed I can fly, I can go up on high buildings but don't put me on a ladder. Embarassed But the ponds are coming on nicely. Wink bounce bounce

Hi Guys,
I took some photos this morning of the mud pond progress. Still very wet and the ponds full of water from the rain, now we have to get it out to continue work. 12 Ponds complete so far and awaiting liners. Liners arrived already and we will put them in shortly.

Thanx Guys! Yes Neli, we want to put liners in the ponds and then put some clay on the bottom again. We do this for a few reasons and I will explain later. Very Happy

Hi Tommy, I am not an expert, but most sources indicate that it is not a good idea. You will get an organic build up between the liner and the clay, and it will be difficult to get rid of it and it will create high Nitrite levels and breeding ground for bad bacteria.

If it is liner only, at least you can vacuum or empty and clean annually. If it is clay only, no problem.

I also had one pond with liner and clay on top and it did not work. Collin Nel from Pretoria also tried it and it did not work. It got "vrot"

Hi Guys.
I'm a bit behind with the postings here, but I'm really really very busy here. Will be taking photos again shortly to post here. Breeding so far went well. What we bred so far are:
1x Sanke pair
1x Sanke pair
1x Shiro Utsuri pair
1x Goshiki pair ( only a few eggs were left as they started and finished during the night. They ate most of the eggs by the time I came out. Sad )
1x Doitsu Showa pair
1x Doitsu Sanke ( only 10% hached after I stuffed up the spawning Shocked )
1x Kohaku pair
1x Shiro Utsuri pair
1x Shusui pair
1x Ochiba pair
1x Shiro Utsuri pair
1x Doitsu Matsuba cross Hariwake pair
Next week we will still be breeding one pair Showa and two pairs of Kohaku.
What we hope to harvest will be:
Sanke
Shiro Utsuri
Sora Utsuri
Kinki Utsuri
Goshiki ( I hope some survived )
Doitsu Showa
Kohaku
Kikusui
Platinum Ogon
Doitsu Kohaku
Shusui
Ochiba
Soragoi
Chagoi
Doitsu Matsuba
Hariwake
Doitsu Sanke (will only be a few)
Showa (spawning will be done next week)
Gin Showa ( Spawning next week)
May God be with this little fishes in their fry ponds and may mother nature give them all they need to grow big, beautiful and strong. This is Miya Oki Koi's first attempt to breed professionally and hope this dream come true. Guess we will see in a year's time. Shocked

James pongoi has his ponds the same : liner and clay on top. He has no filtration just lots of air. He breeds in them and keeps his oyagoi there also. And his ponds are small.

Thank you Costa, I hope and pray for a few good ones, can already see a few that develop promising. Will keep you guys posted.
@ Neli- This is liner ponds with a kink and a twist. Hope the plan work. Very Happy Yes lots of other smaller hobbyist breeders also breed in liner ponds but much smaller and they easily overstock the ponds because they put 3-4 spawnings in there. We try to not overstock the ponds and we will do about 5 to 6 selections before winter comes. Water parameters are checked constantly. But still liner ponds are a bit of a gamble and much more work than a normal mud pond so all our effort can still turn sour and we can loose a lot if not every thing affraid We just hope and pray for the best. We did not fill the liner ponds with clay after Paul and Costa advised us not to. We run them on a other way now and it seem to work so far. They are in a mud pond but they are not really in a mud pond affraid

I think You should give it a try for one pond if you have lots of aeration. Go see James and ask how he operates his ponds and if all is OK.
