Hi all koifriends
Like many new koi enthusiasts, I built a too small pond(12.5 kl) from the start, almost two years ago. I'm starting to fill my new 50 kl pond today and hope to switch on the pump tomorrow. Would like to know what the best 'start-up' procedure will be, i.e. should salt be added, montmorolite clay, etc. I do have mature biomedia to move from the current running pond-believe that will be helpfull. How long should I wait before moving my collection-or should I put in a few 'less worth' koi first? Watertemp dropped to 13 degrees-so I almost stopped feeding. All input will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Philip

Hi Phillip,

I would put salt in at 3 kg per 1,000 lt and then put 2 of your less expensive fish in for a few days. If they are fine ,then move your collection over .Remember to feed very little till your filter kicks in.

Cheers.
Costa.

I agree with Costa, and just check the pH (including fluctuations) before you transfer the koi. Especially if you have build with concrete and used a concrete based sealer like Coprox or Hydro Seal.

I would transfer your koi gradually,so not to shock the system

Thank you Costa, Paul, Joe and Neli-I will keep all the above in mind. I appreciate. Will post some pics when all is finished. Still a lot to do. Pond is almost filled-can't wait to switch on the pump tomorrow to see if my plumbing was successful.
