Hi everybody. I was just wondering, is it possible to replace the pipe to your bottom drain? I have a feeling this might cause some serious problems?

Everything is replaceable, just at what effort and cost?!?!?!

If the bottom drain is in concrete, then I wuld rather just close up the bottom drain completely. Then I would rather just drill thru the side of the pond and lead a new pipe thru that. It would be the easiest and most cost effective way I feel. Drilling thru the side because it is easier to dig down the side of a pond that thru a concrete floor.

Would even just go as far as only drilling thru the wall midway down, lead the pipe thru via elbows etc to the floor & settlement chamber. Halfway dwn because if you spring a leak then at least your pond wont run dry and will only run half way down.

This is just how I would do it, or at least consider to do it

I will go to the point of half way down...it is a good idea for preventing pond drainage if a leak springs...but how will it keep the pond floor clean?
I will put a bend right in the bottom going with perforated pipe along the bottom, and drill a small hole on the pump inlet at suitable height to prevent it from draining the pond or put an elbow in The SC from where the pump sucks and raise the inlet in order not to drain the pond...any way SC inlet to mechanical filter is supposed to be at list 30 cm above the floor...Also if your SC is shallower that the pond and U feed to it by gravity...your pond will never be drained completely...just your pump might burn.
The pipe along the bottom will be able to keep your pond floor reasonably clean...
I put my perforated pipe over the side of the pond...going to the bottom...but then I suck from it with the pump...and send it to a sand filter...then bio by gravity return to pond.
Chris Neaves has the same pipe in his pond...and it has worked well for him.

My mistake is that i used a 50mm ultra zap bottom drain, that goes to my pump then to my sand filter, bio filter1, bio filter2, uv light and returns from there. I'd like to build in a settlment chamber, and another chamber for mechnical filtration to replace the sand filter, but not sure if it'll be effective with that 50mm drain line? At the moment my pond is sparkling clean, its just a pain to backwash everyweek, especially now in winter!! My pond is small, only bout 11000lts. Its approximately 4.5m * 2.2m and a depth of about 1.2m. The other mistake was i only installed one bottom drain in the center, i think i shouldv used two because of the length of the pond.

U are better off like that...SC is harder to wash than a sand filter...Buy a compressor, connect to sand filter...I did that...it washes the sand filter in 4 min sparkling clean...That is all U need to do IMHO>

U can also use a blower...for jakuzi...or some other one...that produces lots of air under pressure.
