I always advise that your system should never be capable of draining completely if a pipe or connection goes.

However, I did not practice what I preached, and one of my ponds drained completely yesterday after a pipe from my bakki shower came loose, leaving devastation.

I could revive 13 fish after hours of TLC , some almost revived from "death", but I still lost 13 including Supreme Champ and former show winners.

Some of the dead ones: (Photo's this morning after they already lost their great shiroji)

PostSubject: That is very tragic!   Always prevent a pond from accidentally draining completely EmptyWed Jan 11, 2012 11:18 am

Hi Paul

I am new to the koi scene. I have read a couple of books already and spoken to some guys like Servaas de kock, Louis Kruger, Jaco vorster about koi and keeping them in ponds.... I am building a 62000lt pond. This is a first for me to see. Thisis a very sad sight indeed!

I wanted to contact you to find out where I can get some quality koi for my collection. I am looking for ood kohaku, Gin rin chagoi, asagi and kumonryu.

Very sad to see, sorry for your loss!

Kind regards
Benman

Baie, baie jammer oor jou groot verlies,Paul.

If you suck water directly from a settlement chamber it normally creates no problems because your settlement chamber is normally above a safe level of your pond.

If you suck directly from your bottom drain or from a pipe in the pond, you should have something like this:

Always prevent a pond from accidentally draining completely DRAIN

If you suck with a submersible, you can lift the pump a bit from your pond floor, although it is not ideal because you get better results if the pump is at the deepest level. On the other hand, you should never pump directly from a pond with a submersible.
