Kumonryu

Kumonryu Kumon

This is a doitsu koi with a 'killer whale' pattern (a black body with white markings).

The term 'kumonryu' means 'nine-crested dragon." in Japanese. Kumonryu koi are unique in the sense that their sumi is unstable, allowing them to change their black-and-white patterns even after they have matured. They are therefore also known as the Chameleon of koi.

They are also decribed by some as 'forever tategoi.' because the change all the time, and ugly ducklings can turn into swan's in a short period of time.

The kumonryu is a relatively new koi variety, acquiring a category of its own in the All Japan show only in 1994.

There is also a beni Kumonryu version with red markings.

This is a photo of a stunning beni Kumonryu that won the best in variety at the Wakagoi show a few days ago:

I think a lot of people would have classified this as a doitsu Sanke?

looking at it once off I would have classified it as a doits sanke. I was looking at a few doits showas last week but the beni\hi was on alot of those' belly's. What happens when the hi\beni is on the belly, is that when it goes from being a doits showa\sanke to a beni kumanryo????

Hi, I have female kumonryu but I don't have male kumonryu, what is the result of the offspring if I cross it with kojaku male and sanke males?
