 | Subject: Koi possibly ready to lay eggs???? Mon Apr 04, 2011 8:57 am | |
| Hi,
I apologize if this post is incorrect or not in the correct category but I require assistance ASAP. I've been in the UK for the past fortnight leaving my beautiful 7 koi fish under the care of my parents. Upon arrival at home yesterday, I was told that one of the kois are rather large at the moment.
I had a look and saw that one of my kois (presumed female) have an enormously swollen belly. it's almost as if her belly bulges out from under her on either side. All the koi are about 3 or 4 years old and there's never been any mating. Could it really be that this koi is bearing eggs? In Autumn/winter? (I'm almost sure they usually mate around spring from what I've been told)
Any advice or answers will be greatly appreciated Thanks D-man |

| D-man,
Don't think its eggs, more like a tumour is my guess. These are beyond saving my friend. |

| JAco, what are the seasons like for spawning in the UK? I know they are going into summer there and the age for the koi to spawn seems abit right. Could it not be eggs? I know that it would be uncommon here in SA now as we are going into winter soon.......know you lived in the UK as well. D-Man, you guys a local forum there as well...... just in case you are unfamiliar with it here is the link http://www.koikeeperunleashed.com/forum/forum.phpMaybe you have someone close by who is knowledgeable and can come have a look for you |

| The thing is I live in SA as do the fish but I've been away for the last 2 weeks (to the UK).
A Tumor????? Is there any specific cause for this?
Your reply doesn't seem as if it's 100% definite. Is there any way that I could investigate further? Are there any other signs that could point to a tumor or egg bearing possibly. If it's of any assistance, I have noticed that the particular fish in question has been hanging around the bottom quite a lot, even when all of the other fish are near the surface every now and then. |

| If you could post a picture I could tell yoo with more surety if it's eggs or not.
Cliff I only visited the UK a few times , never lived there ha ha. But I guess Spring is spawn time all over the world. |

| D-man,
I agree with Jaco.
If the swelling is in the abdominal area of a female Koi, it is possible that the fish is egg-bound. The eggs could turn into a tumor!. Some internal growths and egg retention can put pressure on the swim bladder which results in the Koi losing its ability to stay upright or to move up and down in the water. The pressure of a tumor could result in kidney failure and that can start dropsy.
