Factors to consider when feeding Empty

Feed only high protein food (at least 35% protein). Look for high protein and low fibre, moisture and fat.
Rather feed three times a day than once or twice in summer. Koi do not have stomachs and will grow faster if you feed more regularly.
Feed only once a day during winter and early spring and stop feeding if the water temperature falls below 10 degrees Celsius.
Do not feed more than what they can eat in 5 minutes. If there is still food on the surface after 5 minutes, take it away to prevent an Ammonia and Nitrite build up.
Do not feed with food older than 9 months.
Store food in a dark, cool and dry container. If it becomes mold, it might also become poisonous. Throw it away.
Supplement the diet with fresh food like oranges, water lemon, carrots, peas, grapes and lettuce. Especially the Vitamin C will ensure a more healthier fish and the typical pellet loose 50% of it's Vitamins after a while.
Try to always give food at the same time.
Do not feed more than what your bio filter can handle. If you see that the Ammonia or Nitrites go up to an unacceptable level after feeding, you are feeding too much or your bio filter is too small.
Never feed white bread. Whole wheat brown bread is acceptable but not balanced and can be given as an additional snack.
Do not feed for a day or two after new fish has been introduced.
Do not feed directly before and after transportation.
It takes approximately five hours for the Koi to digest the most common pellets. Do not feed within five hours after the previous feeding session.

My koi love watermelon. I make a whole in the peel and tie it with a piece of rope to a nearby pole. This way the fish can suck away and it is easy to get rid of the peel once eaten clean. Oh, they also enjoy corn on the cob.
