It will take nearly 80 Lt of media per bucket so around 320 Lt of media if my calcs are correct.

I will pump around 13000 Lt into it

Ek het al Jaco se Bakkie shower gesien en lyk goed maar is sekerlik duur omdat dit van staal gemaak is so jou prokuk mag dalk 'n goeie keuse wees vir manne soos ek.

Kan mens 'n Bakkie gebruik op nuwe dam want ek het iewers gelees dat dit slegs sal werk indien dam gevestig is en ammonia/nitriete/nitrate en al die mooi dinge in plek is?

marius ek het my doudts ook gehad maar het self by neville gaan kyk na dit en vir die gewig wat dit gaan dra is dit sterk genoeg.
Daai bakke is nogal redelik dik plastiek ook en ek dink dit gaan pragtig werk ek weet net nie met ons koue en hitte wat die weer daarmee gaan doen nie maar dit sal mens seker met tyd uitvind

Well, it will look better than my amateur/cheap effort! But that set up looks impressive.

Using a small pump from the fish pond, obviously enters from the top, goes through the trickle tower and then into one of the chambers from where it goes through another biofilter, then sand filter, UV, etc and back to pond.

I use all the media possible, from, shavings, to bio rock, to bio balls (in the high pressure biofilter), etc

In reply To some remarks.

Yes this is a prototype for me and I am not sure yet what the final costs will be, the frame at this stage is just painted it will be galvanized later. Yes it will definitely be strong enough as it does not fill up with water it just runs through it, even if the buckets fill up, I am confident it will be fine. I will test it to that point anyway. It is very ridget and that round bar runs through to the other side. The bucket side I also think the stepping makes it quite strong and they are in the same class as the "Big Blue"

As for media, I am still looking around but will probably end up filling 2 buckets with bio balls and two with imitation alfagrog.

The filter will be available to anyone from myself.

Albie your filter only looks home made but also does its job, you just must not fill your baskets to the brim as it needs a good flow of air to assist in adding oxcygen and in the water purifying process.

As for the base of the bucket, we are going to drill tomorrow, I hope. Will start with holes spaced at 100mm staggered with 8mm Dia. Then I will pump some water in and see how it handles it and if need be increase the size or no off till it runs out without damming up too much, one does not want your media to be submerged.

The buckets, if you want are available at R650.00 Excl vat. Not drilled at this stage.

Albie, I am going to stand this over my veggie filter for now. There are many options and I think the stand base will differ all the time to suit different applications.

The sand filter mod? shortly, I am just a bit busy at the office, I also cannot wait, will try for this week.

My bakkie shower's containers are 1200 long and I have 180 x 5.5 mm holes with a .25 kw speck supplying it with a 110 mm pvc spray bar. I have four rows of holes 90 mm appart, 45 holes per row and works well. I have four containers filled with K1 and one with zeolite.

Thanks, this is some very helpful info, think I must start with a smaller hole as well and maybe closer to each other. I want to pump with my .75Kw into it.

Maybe the zeolite is also a good idea, as it is also very close to me (use to fly from the same club as the owner, Kim Pratley) I also intent mixing a small bio block, about 20mm, with the normal one.

PS. This is all in preparation for the new 50,000 Lt pond next year, Ha HA Ha!

Before I get a more "professional" bakkie shower, I can in the mean time also add zeolite, as I have some in my sand filter (to the SF professor's horror!).

How thick is your layer of zeolite Colin and should I put it on top or close to the outflow?

Neville, although it does not look like it, there is a lot of "trickling" and splashing of water to get oxygen in my system.

I will follow this in anticipation, and as when I have a loose R2000, I might install something similar.

I put one 50 kg bag (10 - 13 mm stone) in one of my containers and is 250 mm thick. I have my zeolite in my second last container and the only reason being that I remove the last containers from time to time and the K1 is much lighter. I do not think it will make a difference where you place the zeolite, however I would put it at the bottom just for the ease of it.

Well at last, here is a few photo's of my Bakki Shower running on my deck as demo, had some boffins here and they were quite impressed.
The veggie bags act as a noise suppressor as this thing kicks up a racket, and they also stop the splashing.

Dis maar seker hoe prototipes gaan jong, ek sal dit definitief effe kleiner maak, soos jy se die wind ens.

Die eerste ry water val darem redelik ver van die kant van die volgende bak af en sal dit n taamlike sterk wind kan hanteer. Die regte ding is natuurlik om vir dit antisplash en wind protection flaps op te sit wat in my agterkop is. Net nie genoeg tyd gehad die een is op pad na Durban. Hierdie een is definetief nie gebou met die Kaapse winde in gedagte nie, ek neem kennis.

Daar is soveel verskillende maniere hoe die dink gedoen kan word en ek glo elke een sal maar verskil, solank die prinsiep daar bly. Ek voorsien dat ons hom nog met gemak kan opneem na 6 bakke en ook kan verminder na 2 bakke, regtig baie opsies. DAn ook nog die verskillende tipes en hoeveelhede media ne.

Ja jy kan seker met gemak extra een in sit, ek sien hulle maak dit party maal dat die twee inmekaar sit, dis dan bietjie moeliker om te diens. Myne het ook 'n gap wat help met die in en uit skuif wanneer nodig en staan teen 'n muur, maar ek sou my gaps kleiner verkies.

Good design. Well made - I thought you were on pension? I would also listen to the suggestion to close the gap a little between each level because of the wind factor.

I would remove the media from the bags and place it directly into each tray to get an even flow of water through the system. Bags are surprisingly restrictive especially when algae and bacterial biofilms grow on them.

I also suggest you fill each tray as much as possible with filter media so that you get the maximum surface area in each tray to make the filter more efficient.

The outlet at the bottom should be as large as possible so that there is no restriction at all and there is no water build up in the bottom tray. If the outlet is small this will govern or limit the amount of water that you can send through this biofilter and this defeats the object of a trickle filter / bakki shower.

Ditto, Chris also very good water distribution as Jaco pointed our earlier.

My last or 4th Bakki is sloped to the centre to force the water to a bottom exit. The water runs a 200W x 150H stainless steel channel full and drops into the pond via a meter wide curtain, the point is that the water runs strong and fil the channel to 15mm below the top.
