| Hi Vossie,
When I built my new pond around 2 months ago my kase kohaku took a beating with finrot in the portapool I setup in my garage. I had a bio filter and all on my porta pond and did water changes every 2-3 days, my problem I am sure was down to stress, stress I read is a huge contributing factor to fin rot. I was wondering if I should trim the fins down by cutting them etc but was told fins could possibly grow back skew. So after much investigation believe that if you keep a good salt content in your pond and when the water warms up and the fish start feeding and growing that the fins will come right. A few of my fish have ragged ends to their pecs, so I've been praying for summer to come along to see that all comes right.
You also get a product called fin med or something which I hear is brilliant for tears.....hopefully fin rot too....have not seen this product anywhere tho.
cheers

| Vossie,
die beskadigde gedeeltes moet weggesny word, die vin sal nie vanself regkom nie!
and Anver.......................The damage parts on the fin must be trimmed off. It will not heal by itself! |

Hoe ver weg? Moet dit reguit gesny word? |

| Hi Wayne
Mr de Villiers is correct this time, you should trim the dead tissue of fin as it will then grow back faster, I have found that trimming it and using Acriflavine on the fin helps. Also it is important not to damage the maim ray as this does not grow back easy. Pieter Odendaal from Koi4U is busy with a study on regrowth of fins, see his news letter for this month. Maybe he can help with some real info or follow the link.(I have it at home) |

| Thanks Marius.....think I must go get some.
So should I cut my koi's fins, will they definitely grow back 100%???? I really dont want skew fins as this is my best kohaku.
What is the possibility of it growing back fine without cutting?
thanks |

| Firstly..........removed by myself.
Secondly, Wayne, you need to try and trim the fin in a natural way, by taking the shape of a normal fin in account. Acriflavine is a very mild treatment regarding fin rot, and it is not very effective against the Flavobacterium colomnare ( also known as Flexbacter colmnaris) a bacterium which causes fin rot.
I have found the Methylene Blue mixed with Wound Powder to paste is a better solution to the problem, and then sealed with an application of Friars Balsam.
Cutting away the “infected” area of the fin, should be done with a sharp sterilized pair of scissors. The fin should be cut away behind the area of redness.
If the fin has completely gone and the base of the infected fin is red and sore, it is possible that the infection has spread inside the Koi.
Never cut the ray ( leading) fin. Rather, use a nail file to do the job, as the fin normally split when cut.
As a last resort I suggest an antibiotic injection, using Genta50 injection, although the best is to take a swab to established what anti-bacterial treatment to use.

| The way you 2 go on at each other is ridiculous, why not rather pm each other. I for 1 am not interested in reading immature bickering all day trying to make out inbetween what is worth reading and what is not.
I like you both and this is not me being personal with you so don't take it that way....its just unnecessary and is ruining a lot of valid threads on this forum.
Your both equally advantages to this forum in your own ways, just accept that and respect that and let it be.....come on, at tje end of tje day we all want the same thing here...so let's not ruin it for everyone!
