Dimilin Empty
PostSubject: Dimilin   Dimilin EmptyFri Apr 02, 2010 9:57 pm

Dimilin, effective against Lernaea (anchor worm) and Fish Lice treatment and Ergasilus (gill maggots), and is less toxic towards fish than organophosphates. It will also eradicate fluke, but is not the recommended treatment for fluke.

Insects have an exoskeleton, which basically means they have their skeleton on the outside, rather than the inside as we do. There are differences in the structure of their skeleton and unlike ours, it doesn't grow with them.

To overcome this problem, insects go through growth cycles, during which they shed their old, smaller exoskeleton and make their bodies swell by taking air into the respiratory system. As their body expands it stretches the new, elastic cuticle before it sets hard.

The main component of the insect exoskeleton is a substance called chitin. Diflubenzuron (dimilin) works by interfering with the development of the new chitin exoskeleton, so the insect larvae continues to feed and develop normally until they shed their old exoskeleton. They die because the new exoskeleton is not properly formed.

Dimilin will also kill other invertebrates like water fleas, water scorpions etc.

Dimilin is also marketed as Anchor's Away and has the same active ingredient (Diflubenzuron) as Program that we use for fleas on our dogs.

Dosage rates for Koi:

Powder form: 10g / 10 000 liter (25% Diflubenzuron)
Liquid form depending on the concentration of Diflubenzuron.
A standard level teaspoon will be equal to 2g

It is fairly forgiving.

76% of the treatment persists after one week. A second treatment 10 -14 days later should remove all stages of the parasite.

For further information, see Fishdoc.net

Quotes from Koi vet:

"Anchor Worm and Fish Lice.

These parasites are cleared in 3-4 days at usual seasonal temperatures (Seventies DF).

Dose: One gram per thousand gallons. Mix well in water, distribute evenly around pond. Many people use a plastic gallon jug and shake it well....(Hold the cap on).

•Non toxic to filter, fish or plants
•Will kill crayfish, dragonflies, etc.

Use the following link to obtain a benzoylphenylurea compound / IDI compound which inhibits chitin synthesis but which is NOT branded Dimilin®:

Dimilins Cousin: Lufenuron
"Dimilin is not, and can not be, toxic to your fish at any dose. Even though it is not very well water soluble, it works like a charm." Doc Johnson"

From http://applejack1.com/Pond/Meds.htm

DIMILIN - Dimilin is an insect growth regulator. It is effective on molting insects such as Lernea (anchor worms). Both powder(25% wetable powder) and liquid(2 pounds of active ingredient per gallon) forms are available. In tanks we use about 1 teaspoon of the powder to treat 1,000 gallons. If the liquid form is used, treat about 3 milliliters per 800 gallons. For anchor worm control in ponds use ¼ pound of powder per acre foot or 4 fuid ounces of liquid per acre foot. Dimilin is very safe with fish and it stays active for 3-4 weeks.

Thanks Admin
This looks like a couple of hours research Smile

Dimilin is also being used for fly and mosquito control by spraying approximately 10 ml per 5 liters of water for a 10 square meters area. (SC48 version / 480g Diflubenzuron per 1 liter) or 20g per 5 liter per 10 square meters if you use the powder form (250g Diflubenzuron per Kg)

Also for midges and gnats.

See http://www.wefco-africa.co.za/userfiles/All%20Labels/Dimilin%20Brochure.pdf

I am going to spray all possible fly and mosquito breeding areas today.

It also kills Dragon flies and I am thinking of using it during the breeding season to control dragonflies. The Dragon flies lay their eggs at spawning time in the same pond and the larvae grow faster than the fry, and can kill all your fry if you do not cover your pond beforehand with a net to prevent the adults from laying their eggs.

The active ingredient being Diflubenzuron is also the active ingredient in Program used for the control of ticks and fleas on dogs. If I know the correct dosis, I would have given some to my dogs. I am fighting a losing battle on the farm with fleas on my dogs. At least I know that it should cause no problems should my dogs drink the pond water while treating with dimilin.

The liquid form is available from us. (Dimilin SC-48)
