Hi Frans, welcome to the forum.

Your fish are not too bad as pond fish. However, not high quality.

The Shiro's head is going to be very black with no interesting pattern. Difficult to judge the rest from the small photo.

I think the Tancho will loose it's hi and you will be left with a Shiro Muji. The Hi apprears to be not strong enough to hold. The pinkish colour of the body is not a good sign.

Your Ochiba has a messy pattern and far to heavy on the front with no interesting pattern. The brown should look like autumn leaves floating on the water. However, the net pattern appears to be very good, which is very important when judging an Ochiba.

The Kin Matsuba is going to be very dark when large, and the head is dirty which is a demerit.

Your first Shusui is the best of all in my opinion. Very clean head, nice light blue with strong hi, although too high up. The scalation on a Shusui should be well defined. In this case, it is not the case but time will tell.

Your Hi Shusui has an odd body shape, and too much hi. However, it can develop into a nice pond fish.

Good luck with them all.

Hi Frans

When I was at the National Koi Show in Cresta two weeks ago, I found that Loolilocks offered good value for money with their Taiwanese koi.

For Japanese koi, Mario from The Koi Farm might be a good option as his prices sounded reasonable.

However, I am not from Johannesburg. Other members like Pieter or Neville will be in a better position to advise you.

You may also send me an E-mail with your requirements, and I can quote you on some of our fish.

Look at all the options and make informed and selective decisions. Koi hunting is part of the excitement.

Go to Orient Koi Farm in Pretoria, go to Sakura or Koi Depot@CND and buy then.

Check out the dealer properly. If you see any possible health problems at a dealer, do not buy, move on.

In my opinion it is not worth it to spend money on local bred koi, especially from Pet shops, although there are exceptions.

Rather buy five top quality imported koi than 15 low quality koi, and stick to 1 koi / 1000 liters.
