My Kohaku 44cm

Seems a bit heavy in the belly but i like the full pattern, hi and white look good

Thanks for your coments and also on the other fish. Yes on all my fish the whites is snow white, it is sort of the first thing I look for. At present my fish are a bit fat, like their owner, but that is in anticipation for the 3 weeks that we cant feed before the show and also winter is around the corner.
I also think the garlic and honey helped to get the coulours good.

Who told you to stop feeding for 3 weeks before a show?
How old is your kohaku? Breeder? Nothing wrong with a full pattern (or big fish pattern like I like to call them!). Next time try to take the pic more from the front and above so we can evaluate the simmetry of the fish as well as the build from head to tail.

That was defnately the rule with the baby show and I was olso told again by Mrs Botha from sakks.
I will come back to you with the breeder he is local but I dont know the breeding stock. He is now 3years.

Ok, I was not going to contradict SAKKS on a public forum. But according to the latest KOISA 231, page 14 - article by Ray Jordan on preparing your koi for a show he clearly states not to feed your koi 5-7 days before a show. So they have contradicted them selves on this one. I've always used 7 days as a standard.

On the circular sent out for this show it states that entrants be advised to stop feeding two weeks before the show.
I dont have a problem my fish will be fine for this, it is just that one looses growth with your non show fish because you only have one pond.
But I understand the reasons for not feeding so it is ok.

Neville where does that kohaku come from?

I ask cause my gut feeling says that its a local bred kohaku from Platinum koi - Servaas. I say this cause there was a batch in 2006 that all had very simular head markings, strong red and brilliant white. See below. Mine (the middle one) is no longer with us but was a very slow grower. The one on the right as another person in wellingtons. Confirmed as also from paltinum koi.

Mine comes from a guy in maanhaarrand near rustenburg, Bernie, he breeds and it is not impossible that his fish ended up there.

Hi Guys
Just a stupid question any particular reason for using blue bowls for showing the koi,I am slowly working my way through this forum and others to absorb as much as possible before we start digging the hole.
Looking at the photo's I notice a lot of blue reflection from the bowls on the fish,where as on some pictures of ponds where it is a dark background the colours seem to be more intence and clear.
I am definetly Koi hooked

I dont know if there is any other reason than the fact that blue is very neutral and it allows the fish colours to come forward.
They have been using them for many years and who are we to argue.
