Two things comes to mind. Gill rot or KHV.

The first step would be to inspect the gills. See if they look healthy. Are there any other signs, for instance lethargic etc?

Can also be costia or a bacterial infection.

If the gills look fine, do a scrape to check for costia.

There is also a condition known as pig eye where the bone around the eye grows and starts to cover the eye. That can also cause they to look sunken.

ooh, ooh. Adeel how many fish do you have and please until this is resolved dont move any in or out of your pond. This does not sound good to me where are you situated? Are you a SAKKS member? I think you should call them if you are. If you tell me where you are I will tell you where to have a KHV test done.

I cannot comment on anything else but this ... that fish looks particularly thin to me .. almost as if it starved.

Looks like gill rot.

Symptoms of gill rot:

Sunken eyes
Discoloring (see the grey spot)
Section of the gills missing
Filaments appear to stuck together
Fish lethargic

Gill rot is caused by either KHV or Flavobacterium columnare or in short Columnaris disease which is a bacterial disease.

It can also be caused primarily by parasites that goes over into this type of secondary bacterial disease. Is it you you phoned me about fish lice and ordered Dimilin from me?

If any of the other fish are affected, you should take a swob asap and send it to MDS in Durban. See the procedure and application form under the KHV heading of this forum.

Please keep us posted.

Friars Balsam is good. I seal all wound with that after I have cleaned it with Malachite green. It is nice and sticky and almost waterproof the wound, and it is cheap.

Hi Adeel

Ek gebruik F10, Vra jou vet hy sal he
potasium wat el baie sterk aanmaak
Wound powder (antibiotika poeier spesiaal gemeng)
Freirs Balm
Mercurochrome
Gentions violet
Woundmed.

Al hierdie goed werk, Maar dit help nie jy sit jou vis terug in slegte water nie jy moet jou water gesond kry.

You must have this checked out. As Neville and Paul say this could be the start of something and it may be related to stress.

Also please keep a close watch on the other koi.

I have seen sunken eyes as a direct result of stress - continuous stress. So there could be a number of causes.

Question - I may be mistaken but in the pictures you posted there appeared to be tiny bubbles in the fins?

If so - there could be a pressure problem with the gasses in your pond and the fish has gas bubble disease.

Question: Did you purchase the koi from different sources?

Question: How did you transport them to Vryburg?

Regards,
Chris

talk to me about the venturies -
how deep?
is the pump pushing very hard?
were those little air bubbles I saw in the fins?
is any air being sucked in at the lid of the pump?

@ chris ,venturi is about 20cm under water surface, doesnt push very hard ,i have a regulator controling the pressure. no air sucked into lid.. those were normal water bubbles you saw.

Hi Adeel
