Hi Cronje

Neville is pulling your leg, you can't believe a thing he says. lol! lol!

It is probably a Doitsu Ginrin Kagami of the Karasu family?

Kagami – an old koi variety with mirror scales on both the dorsal and ventral sides

Karasu – a totally black koi, often tinged with a blue haze

PostSubject: Another Q.   Please identify EmptyWed May 05, 2010 3:31 pm

I bought 8 very small Koi +- 4yrs ago and put them in a large pond which gets its water from a fountain - 100 000l or so. Now I sit with 400+ koi and the large ones are eating me off the planet. Not many Koi farmers round here so, could you advise as to how much one could get for a fish like that? As I'm not a pro obviously I dont want to rip ppl off. The smaller ones are 10cm - 20cm+. Thing is there are light blue with perfect black markings (like the black ones) along the dorsal fin and white head and some nice-ish ones. I would just like a pointer please.

Dankie Cronje,

Ek dink "Nazigoi" is n heel gepaste naam vir hierdie vis.

Ai Paul julle kan darem party goed glo man. lol!

Hi Cronje,

Neville: wont let them free. Apparently against the law. I already have "Hamerkop", some King fishers and a giant King Fisher gooi-ing a sushi at the main pond but they dont seem to make a dent in the number of Koi I have...anyway, if all else fails off with their heads. I'm 160km north of Polokwane; transport for me would be a nightmare. Deep bush. In Louis Trichardt - Makhado the only pet shop there doesnt take Koi longer than 8cm so Im buggered. Maybe I should start breeding Fish Eagles/King Fishers now. Then I can stop worrying and call all my Koi Kamakazigoi and those who can really not stand the heat, Harikirigoi.

thank you all for all yr input. Much obliged.
Question: on the waterfall/water feature at my home pond, there are funny little worms clinging(quite tightly)to the cement and stones. They are about a mm to 3mm in size. Black with a hard exosceleton. What are these? Are they a threat to my Koi and if yes, what do I do? I have a 10 000l pond.

Suggestion, why not post a few pics of fish you want to get rid of, if there is like 10-15 fish, transport etc would all make sense.....maybe post them under koi for sale, and ask for bids, subject to getting 10-15 together....

As soon as I find out whether those things on my waterfall are parasites or not, I guess I wont be getting rid of them right now. And if those are parasites and I dont quickly do something about it, they'll getting rid of themselves for me. Thanks for advise though.

Yet another Q: How many Koi in size range 15 - 20cm long can I keep in a pond which holds 10 000?

10 would be the safe nummber to keep as they can grow fairly large fairly quickly in the right climate.

However if you filtration is very good and you have a decent setup with decent turnover you could always go up to 15.

Hi Cronje,
I think you are already way past this no.?
anyway I think Chris is correct longterm but a bit conservative for the short term. If I am correct you have a fountain feeding this pond, now it will depend on how much water this fountain are replacing per day and you can then make an assumption. Bit difficult for us to say, without knowing.
Please give a bit more detail and maybe also some pictures.

PostSubject: The number of my beast   Please identify EmptySat May 08, 2010 6:50 am

Hi Neville,
you're quite right, I AM past 10 and even 15 fish in number. There are 400+ Koi in my home pond. 7 large ones i.e. 35 - 55cm. According to you guys that's about the limit, right?
They are the mama's and papa's of the 400 or so youngsters that share the 10000 litre pond with them. A wild guess tells me that about 5000litres drain away during the day(winter) and it gets fresh water 24/7; i.o.w. 5000litres of fresh water everyday, right?
I had a parasite scare yesterday but luckily it turned out to be just that. A scare. The fish all seem very happy but still I guess the more space the better. The water almost never clouds and I have only two small circulation pumps for the water feature. The manure and leaves that build up at the bottom, I remove with a contraption that works like a vacuum cleaner. Water temp average 25 degrees but never below. In summer it gets way warmer. I'm pretty sure the water quality is good; it tastes great anyway...
Camera is in for repairs but soon's it's back, I'll post some .
Thanks for the advise so far from y'all and keep it coming.
Lekke weekend.

With a daily 50% water change, the normal principles do not apply to you.

1 fish per 1000 liter is normally good for the long term, bearing in mind that the fish will probably reach 60-70 cm each, leaving you with 65cm/1000 liters.

The top end hobbiest, especially in the UK and America, believe in up to 2500 liters/fish, but then we are talking about optimal conditions for show quality.

The general rule of thumb is 66cm / 1000 liters at any time. In your case, a total of 666 cm, provided that you take out as they grow.

However, with your daily water changes of 50%, I think you can host at least three times more.

Ja maar gelukkig is hulle nie lekker en sal jy dus nie eitlik takers kry nie. Daar is beter vis as jy will vis eet.
