Thanks for the comments! Smile

I've been having problems with the bubble bead filter leaking around the lid. The whole filter was replaced with a new one and that one is leaking the same. New pond #2 A_doh

Is that those retro-fitted sand filters? or proper bead filters? I warned someone on the forum against those retro fitted once.

Its the bead filter from Zap.
Apparently they had problems with the housing on a few, the lid didn't fit flush, and have now rectified the problem. So just waiting for a new one.

What is the retro fitted one??

There are dealers who are selling sand filters that they have changed into beadfilters.

Quinton what sand filter do you have and what size gravel inside? If you can afford it a multi cyclone will help to keep the maintenace down.

Finer gravel will make it clog up much more.

I have replaced all my sandfilters with normal builders gravel. 12 mm. It don't clogg up as much, it is cheap, you get more biological filtration (but less mechanical filtration) and better flow rates due to less resistance.

Hi Quinton

A lot has been said about sandfilters and their maintanance recently. I have done some mods and can tell you that once you use air (or have a tool), to clean your sandfilter they are a pleasure and work very well.

Regular backwashing with air will reduce the presure loss considderably and it is then rather negligable. you should not rely on your sandfilter as a bio filter it is realy a better mechanical filter. (I fitted a 50Lt Ultrazap to do the bio work). Normal backwhashing does not clean koi muck from a sandfilter.(that feature only works for dust from swimming pools)

Cleaning intervals is realy dependent on your particular situation

The best sand I have found is the sand supplied by speck pumps, it is made specially for koi sand filters.
